Cop uses helicopter for doughnut run, gets investigated. Any real life incident involving cops & doughnuts is farcical. But should this guy be disciplined? Cops use their cruisers for this purpose all the time. Maybe he shouldn't have had the pilot land in a open field, though. Also debatable: why am I reading about cops & doughnuts at 11pm on a Fri. night?

The officer and the civilian pilot were on night patrol over the city in a Kiowa OH-58 helicopter when they landed in a vacant lot next to a Krispy Kreme doughnut store around 1 a.m. (3 a.m. EDT) on Thursday morning.

Farbeit from me to defend a cop, but they were already in the chopper. They just landed and got some grub. What's the big deal?

I imagine that the issue will center around landing a helicopter in an unapproved area. Landing in a un-surveyed civilian area in anything other than wartime seems a tad renegade to me. The backwash from the rotors adds value though, no need to worry about powdered sugar all over your pants.

Okay, I'll agree that it's a tad renegade. But we're talking about Krispy freakin' Kreme, here. Conventional rules do not apply. Also, if the guy gets fired, Krispy Kreme should hire him to do a commercial. Kind of like those Subway commercials with Nathan, King of the Dork Tribe, only not as annoying.

Agreed with Optamystic... if I could get a copter to deliver hot krispy kreme to me... I'd be a happy man. The Dunkin Doughnuts I'm stuck with living in Boston just don't cut it.

a sackable offense in most organisations.
mis-use of resources for personal reasons.
if you can't trust someone to do their job, then they are not a reliable employee.
plenty of people have been sacked for far lesser offences.
quite apart form the abuse of public trust.
they are supposed to serve the public, not their stomachs.
sends out the message 'get away with what you can'.

At a locally Dunkin Doughnuts I frequent some arse grabbed the counter person's tip cup and ran. He didn't notice the cop's in the queue behind him. Needless to say he didn't get far.

Here in Lexington ky the cops are not allowed to buy doughnuts, while on duity. seriously.

Nor can they wear mirrored sun glasses (the gold rim kind).

I think its kind of funny.... but I understand it.

Um. This helicopter costs $80/hr. This article doesn't mention it, but the article previously posted here on this subject explains that they spent about fifteen minutes getting the doughnuts. That's a whopping $20 of taxpayer money wasted on buying doughnuts. Wow, I'm so impressed. What a waste of money. Yeah, whatever.

A couple points,

1. the landing in the parking lot probably violates a few laws.

2. The $80 per hour doesn't cover insurance.

3. The time they spent on the ground is time they should have spent patroling the area.

Its three that's really the problem. I don't think break includes free use of a helicopter.
