The spreading of a smear tactic?

Romney is now a verb. Taking inspiration from the redefinition of Santorum by Dan Savage (Previously), someone set up a new site (first link) on the 10th of this month. It's already near the top of results for "Romney" on several major search engines.

This is interesting at least in part because the inspiration for the site is, as NPR points out, not a new story. The short version of the story is that Romney put the family dog in a carrier and strapped that to the roof of a station wagon for a family vacation trip to Canada.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I know this is totally a thing happening on the internet but if there's not much more to it than "here's a site that everybody's linking to do the Santorum googlebomb thing to Romney" so far, I'm not sure that's really a great post for mefi. -- cortex

I've thought for a while that if the internet really latched on to the dog story it could be very damaging for him. Few things The Internet hates more than someone who is cruel to animals.

I thought this was going to be about something he did accidentally, Clark Griswold-style. But no. Now I won't be voting for him TWICE as hard.

And now I see Gibson's unevenly distributed future, where all profoundly obscene slang terms have their ultimate derivation in the names of politicians.

That's fitting, I guess.

I don't think Romney's opponents want anyone to realize he owned a station wagon.

I think we should also be sure that the story that gets around is that efficiency-minded Mitt cleaned the dogshit off the car by going through a car wash with the dog STILL IN THE CRATE on the top of the car. The car is clean, the dog is both punished and clean, and they arrive in Canada lookin' sweet.

In other Rom-news: Romney Says His Effective Tax Rate Is About 15 Percent

My favorite quote from the article: “'And then I get speaker’s fees from time to time, but not very much.'” .... in the most recent year, Mr. Romney made $374,327.62 in speaker’s fees..."

Yes, not very much indeed. I'll bet $10,000 that close to 400 grand is a more than "not very much" to most of his constituents.

Oh well, I can't bitch too much. I hedged my bets by donating to the Romney campaign. I'm supporting him for the primary season and then voting for Obama.
