My sister lives in Ridgefield, right near Sendak, and this pretty much went right along wit what she has told me about him (reclusive, occasionally does readings for the kids, who he's great with.) I never knew he was gay, not that it matters.
As for "tallywhacker," that got a muge laugh out of me because I have only ever heard that term once before, while standing in the Louvre at nine years old, pondering a series of statues by one of the doors which depicted naked men looking downwards in grotesque shouting grimaces. My mother found me and said, frankly, "It looks like they're trying to scream at their tallywhackers."
