Mustache 2.0

Face detection has various applications. Easymustache.com is perhaps not one of the most practical ones.

Face Mustacher is a Javascript web application that detects faces in an image and applies a mustache to them. You can enter the URL of any image on the web into the box and click on the mustache button. Here is an example with the famous photo from the Solvay Conference. (Via the r/programming subreddit)

I love that even the eight-foot-tall invisible man lurking at the Solvay Conference gets tagged.

'Mustacher' is a word that should see more usage.

Bonus points:

25 - The neckstache.

My bearded face apparently breaks it, which either makes me sad, or simply reasserts my overwhelming manliness. I haven't decided which, yet.

This feels appropriate. The ones that mustache wrong feel like they are on purpose with those, at least. Though fine art photography doesn't seem to work all that well in general, maybe it's the black and white?

But could someone make a plugin for Chrome for this so I can just right click on an image and get the option to mustache it? That'd be great.

Google Hangouts has had similar functionality for a few months now (except over the holidays it was reindeer antlers and noses). It's fun when you leave the room and your mustache gets hung up on your chair.

This works for me in neither Firefox nor Explorer. Firefox just shows the count saying it was loaded in 771 ms, and Explorer, "Loading image from web ..." In neither case is there an image.

Yeah it does not work in IE 8, or iOS, it uses web workers which are not supported. It works for me in FF.
posted by Ad hominem at 2:36 PM on January 30, 2012

It works in Firefox for me but when it doesn't detect a face, it doesn't seem to give an error or anything, just loads the image normally. About a third of the images I've loaded in have come out mustacheless :(

Mister Fabulous -- are you messing with me?

Spoilers:

No stache: 2nd row from bottom, far left, "Heather"
Boobstaches:
1. 2nd row, 2nd from left, "Yipa."
2. 2nd row, dead center, redhead.
3. 3rd row, far right, named "Rashida"
4. Top row, 3rd from right, "Ashley"
5. Top row, 4th from right, "Maya"
6. Top row, 3rd from left, "Vandy"
7. The one I didn't originally see, 4th row, far left, "Monica"
8. The other one I didn't see, 4th row, 3rd from left, "Heath(?)"
Nickstache: 3rd row, far right, "Rashida"
posted by Mister Fabulous at 3:05 PM on January 30, 2012

Heather most certainly has a stache.
posted by shakespeherian at 3:08 PM on January 30, 2012

I think it varies from person to person. Heather is lacking a 'stache in my version, but Rashida doesn't have the neck 'stache she's supposed to.

posted by The Bellman at 3:17 PM on January 30, 2012

Yeah, it must vary somehow from person to person as yeolcaoatl says, because Heather has a fairly well-aligned non-boob stache in mine as well. The only one that is close to stache-less in mine, is Monica in the back row, second from left, who has more of a chin stache.
