In 1865, Colonel P. H. Anderson of Tennessee wrote to his former slave Jourdon Anderson to request that Jourdon return to P. H. Anderson's farm. Jourdon Anderson wrote (or more likely dictated) a letter in response, which is well worth reading.

Kottke found more information about what happened to Jourdon Anderson.
