In the winter of 1978, the farmers from the village of Xiaogang, China, met in secret and signed a contract to end collective farming. It was a very risky decision, recognized in the contract by the following clause: if any of the farmers were imprisoned or executed for this transgression, the others would be responsible for caring for their children until age 18. NPR's Planet Money has the story about this pivotal moment in modern Chinese history.
