"Standing" doesn't seem to do the dog justice; perched, maybe. I think all the pictures are from the same angle because Maddie exists in 2D. Come on!

I remember reading about an iPhone app -- the name escapes me right now -- that records video during the awkward moments just prior to taking a picture. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if we could see those few moments prior to each of these pictures.

Maddie's owner is a guy I went to photo school with. He's spending a year traveling around taking photos of everyday people and telling their stories, in addition to making his dog stand on things. I also have a coonhound, but he refuses to stand on things.

misskaz: I dunno, I think she looks rather pleased with herself in many of the pictures. Those are looks into the distance, where Maddie might yet go. Distant places where she can move and play, not just stand on things all the time. Those looks are longing looks, because she is a dog. Good dogs behave, and she is a good dog. I'm mostly kidding, because I'm sure Maddie is well-cared for and not always a super serious perching dog.

Thanks for linking to that bradbane. I had really considered making that the link to "travel around" but I was afraid that all the awesome in there would distract from Maddie, which I felt was neat enough on its own. Buy yeah, the rest of Humphrey's work is worth checking out.

That dog does not look happy. Agreed with misskaz, Maddie looks quite pleased with herself in many of the pictures. Our yellow lab loves climbing up on stuff. My guess is that Maddie must get some fun out of it, or she'd be looking way more unpleasant (or simply be uncooperative enough that there wouldn't be this many successful pictures).

Is this something that coonhounds are famously good at? Yeah, they climb. We had two at one point and they regularly made amazing leaps onto tiny perches. One would leap up and balance on the post holding a drinking fountain to drink for example. It was probably 6" square. A 70lb dog. They could leap onto the back of the couch and run back and forth along it. I even saw one of them run along the top of a fence like a cat for ages before she fell off. They could get waaaaay up trees too.
