For what it's worth, I've found browsing YouTube comments bearable since installing CommentSnob on Firefox and Chrome. Too Many Capital Letters? Comment hidden. Excessive punctuation!?! Gone. Profanity? Gone. It eliminates 90% of the idiocy (approximately 70% of YouTube comments, depending on the context). posted by Bora Horza Gobuchul at 6:25 PM on February 27, 2012 [3 favorites]

I don't mind all the swearing. It's the fact that they can't spell the swears that makes me weep for civilization. posted by Sys Rq at 7:16 PM on February 27, 2012 [4 favorites]

I just spent more time than I care to admit looking for a video of a song I was sure was the @herpderppedia"Day Without Wikipedia" twitter reactions set to music. Then I realized I was actually thinking of the song "WTF?! I Wanted An iPhone!!!" Which, to my mind, is even more depressing than Twitter's reaction to the SOPA blackout. posted by ob1quixote at 10:05 PM on February 27, 2012 [1 favorite]
I had a script years ago which turned every Youtube Comment into a inspirational quote, it was lovely. posted by wheelieman at 6:50 AM on February 28, 2012
It'd be interesting to find out just how unintelligent someone must come across before we feel bad laughing at them. posted by ODiV at 12:18 PM on February 28, 2012

I don't think these things are much about laughing at a lack of intelligence, but rather about laughing at people making themselves ridiculous. It is funny when someone's hubris is such that they don't see or don't understand their limitations and thereby do something ridiculous. Simply not being intelligent doesn't mean you lack wisdom, common-sense and self-perceptiveness. What characterises YouTube comments, to me, is pretty much exactly their lack of such vital personal traits, not their lack of intelligence. Of course, a lot of that is a function of the medium, but the appearance is still there. posted by howfar at 11:04 AM on February 29, 2012
