I kid! Amazing to see how many details are hand-done.

I love love love Fluevogs, and am still kicking myself that I failed to score a pair of Paris pumps in olive ostrich... (in size 7.5, if anyone's got extra ones laying around...)

Ah, this is kind of a bummer. I used to only own Fluevogs. I have a few pairs from the mid-90's that I still wear, and still hold up. But there has been a marked drop-off in quality, at least for men's shoes. They fall apart, the stiching comes undone, the heels come off. They are nice about replacing them, but how many times do you want to replace a shoe? Sad.

You are going to have to replace the heels and soles on men's dress shoes no matter what. Even on shoes hand made in the US or UK. I typically wear Allen Edmonds Park Avenue oxfords to work and even rotating I get them resoled a couple times a year. This is just the operating cost of the shoes. Unless you want to wear rubber soles. I sometimes wear Neil M. Senators when it is wet out so I am not slipping all around on leather soles. Those rubber soles last forever.

Just this morning I was doing a last closet pass for a Goodwill run, picked up my late-90s two-tone Angels, dusted them off and put them back. I may be past the age where I can rock them successfully but they please me too much when I see them to give them up.

I searched for new footwear last year, in part to replace a 20 year old pair of Florsheims, which indeed had frequent soles and heels replacements. I began to despair, as most of the shoes I looked at had soles like this, which would not be practical (possible?) to replace regularly.

I was rescued from this sorry state by an introduction to these bad boys, which cost just over $100, and are made in Canada. Fluevogs they ain't, but it's great to know that you can buy decent, reasonably priced foowear that's made in North America.

Also, I was going to say: "Topy FTW", but apparently there is some controversy on that point (I have more than once had Topy soles put on before even wearing a new pair of shoes).

AdHominem, I know replacing soles and heels is a part of owning shoes, but the heels on a pair of Fluevog dress shoes came off after a month. Fluevog sent me a new pair and the same thing happened. The heels were just glued on, with short tacks. I took them to a shoemaker and had them properly nailed on. They used to make shoes that lasted for a long, long time. Now they fall apart quickly. Luckily I have older pairs that I can still wear. But unfortunately I can't recommend Fluevogs anymore.

For the build quality, they should be half the price. Before the price was justified. Not any more.

Oh man, that does suck. I didn't realize they are that bad. In my experience I'll wear holes through the sole before a heel falls off.

Haha, from that stylefrom thread about Topys:

There was a leaflet in y shoe box that specifically warned against the use of Topy rubber soles because they prevent moisture from escaping thus causing damage to the soles. FYI.

JM Weston say the same thing citing the inability of the sole to "breathe".

my wallet needs to be emptied constantly for it to breathe

I used to hang out at SF all the time, but eventually decided I wasn't sufficiently obsessed.
