Everyone screams for ice cream! I found out that Edy's owns the icrecream.com domain. It's actually quite a nice site, and if anything, it has the certain level of childood simplicity one associates with ice cream. I especially like the taster and was honestly disappointed that his tour schedule isn't posted.

Maybe not as dynamic as Ben And Jerry's, but appropriately sweet.

actually, i liked the icecream.com site better than ben and jerry's. it was kind of surreal to watch the chocolate sauce fly down from the top and splat onto the sundae.
here in texas the big thing is blue bell, and for good reason, although their site is nothing to scream for...

Hmm... let's see. That wall over there has to come down. It isn't a load-bearing wall is it? Well, we'll let the architect deal with that.

This ice cream freezer is _definitely_ staying though. Thanks!

If we put my old couch over there, and a ping pong table there, we could have ourselves a pretty nifty clubhouse!

Where should the secret exit go?

I can't BELIEVE we colonized like 10 comments from 1000. I mean, the marginal cost of the extra gig or so of bandwidth is not that bad compared to what we've already done there. That and I wanted to see the thread that first broke 100 break 1000. What was it that was said before? Will Matt grow an extra head? Hee hee.

Oh, it hasn't broken 1000 yet? Well, we should bump it up to 1000 then, I hadn't counted.

It's our responsibility and privilege to keep Neale's dream of the Longest MetaFilter Thread alive, so I don't think we should ever stop completely, just not 142 messages every day. That's a little bit silly. :-)

I'm pretty sure that connecticut-web.com is run by one guy. He's answered all my e-mails, even the ones sent to various general accounts (ie, support@... sales@...) and for a service run by one guy, he's doing a pretty good job.

Plus, for $24 bucks, a few days of strife are mildly acceptable, as long as they don't last long. He's responded quickly and courteously to all my questions and addressed all my concerns quite nicely.

It's just really annoying not to be able to find all the information myself, especially when I've spent all day at work thinking about database structure and interface and stuff.

Anyway, if the hosting for 1142.org goes well (reliable, up plenty, etc.), it's reasonably likely I'll move more domains to them, because 24 bucks for a year is pretty hard to beat.

Whoo-hoo!

Ice Cream! I'm gonna have some Ice Cream! In the middle of every day and all through the night we're singing, ICE CREAM!

Sorry, that bit of nostalgia was brought to you by my childhood memories of Bill Cosby (may he rest in peace eventually).

Look I think that each of us should go back to 1142, post one or two really kickin' comments to bump it to 1000, then have Matt immediately close the thread, seal it in glass, and save it for posterity. Oh, and I nominate Neale for the honor of comment 1000, with the penultimate comment from Matt.

Who's with me?

(hot damn that loaded quickly...)

Sorry, MarkAnd . . . didn't mean to serve it up so hot. I'd actually forgotten about our conversation yesterday, and was just publicly celebrating. (And really, Nomo looked really strong for 3 innings, but then something crucial blew out and he looked pretty shaky after that. I don't know why they left him in as long as they did . . . not his night. Lucky for us, on the other hand, Sele was having a banner night.)

I think Nomo gets into trouble when he has to pitch from the stretch. Just as long as he doesn't allow any hits or baserunners, he's fine (although he did do a good job of getting out of one jam last night...) He just has to carry a no-hitter into the seventh every game. No big deal.

I was a little surprised to see Nomo brought back out for the sixth, too... (Man, the Ms look good this year. Think the pitching will hold up?)

DSL at home/T1 at work, Anil, but I think the bandwidth concerns are more on the order of "Why is Matt suffering silently as we chew up a third of the total bandwidth for MeFi? What jerks we are!"

Man, the Ms look good this year. Think the pitching will hold up?

Well, I hope so. I don't see why it shouldn't (I can't tell you how wonderful it is to have this pitching staff after all the long years of suffering . . . remember Bobby Ayala? :::Shudder:::). They've built the staff and made some great changes (getting Rhodes out of the rotation, where he was horrendous, and putting him into relief/middle-relief, where he excels), and I don't see any overt health issues. It's sure weird having Charlton back.

Hell, even if everyone suddenly falls victim to a Simpsons-style mishap, we can always just move Ichiro onto the mound from left field. After firing strikes to home plate from way the hell out there in the hinterlands, it should be easy as pie from the mound. :)

we can always just move Ichiro onto the mound from left field

I just read an article that says he can throw in the mid-90s. That's insane. Bobby Ayala couldn't have been worse than Matt (Sigh) Young. Eep.

What's the deal with "Ichiro"? I thought that was his first name. Why is it on his jersey? (Or does he just have one name now like South American soccer stars? Or do I just not understand Japanese prae/cognomen?)

I want some more people to donate money to Jeremy Bushnell's giveaway fund, because the item I desperately desire costs $56 at the cheapest place I can find it. As it seems silly for me to abstractly want such a thing without contributing myself, I was going to get a PayPal account and donate the $5 they give you for free. Then, alas, I discovered (a) one must drop $100 in the account, and I don't have $100 to stick in their "money market" hole, plus (b) some kind of wonky error on their end is making it impossible for me to create a new account today in any case.
[daveadams]
So yes, we are consuming quite a bit of that, but there's plenty left for expansion to post 2000 and beyond!!!!

It's not the amount of room in the pipe I'm worried about, it's the cost of moving it through. I've no idea what kind of agreement Ev has with his ISP, but at some point, someone's paying for bandwidth.

Now, it's likely a better plan than 4GB per month, which is pretty common low-end hosting rates, but we're needlessly jacking the amount of data flowing through Pyra's pipes.

Plus we're slowing Ev's surfing down... :-)

I could be completely off here, but I also remember something about BlogSpot using the regular Pyra T1 as opposed to the same hosting company that Blogger's on. I don't know why I think that, but I do.

Either that or there's something else that uses the Pyra T1.

Plus when Matt started hosting me I remember he mentioned he hosts something like 15 other sites , and I'd feel pretty bad about stealing bandwidth from the 13 innocents.

And the 5k's probably sucking bandwidth too.

(at least one of the other people Matt hosts has contributed to the size of this thread)

Anyway, I do agree that there's tons of room before we start flooding the T1 with just our data, but I still figure it's best to move on.

Plus I was getting really sick of the load time, and I've got the company T1 and dial-up at home.

Immunity: Colby

Winner: Tina

There's no way in hell Keith can win.

If Tina doesn't win immunity, she's gone. Neither Keith nor Colby can get more votes than her in the jury.

Therefore, my picks are:

Immunity: Tina
Bootee: Colby (because Tina and Keith have been allies from the start)
Winner: Tina
Final vote: Unanimous.

Ah, Aaaugh brings back some memories. I'd love going to the now-defunct (thank god) Cleveland Municipal Stadium as a kid in the 80's (I'm sure I saw that terrible bullpen lineup, even) & getting nosebleed seats.. and then moving down to the good seats after about the 4th inning because nobody else was there. Days when the announced attendance was in the seven or eight thousand range (which looks awful in a stadium that seats 75,000). Still, it was (and is) still fun to go to games.. gotta get to some this year.

As far as Survivor, I still haven't seen it yet, and don't think I'm going to start tonight since I'm at work. We DO have a TV at work, but at the moment it's tuned into WWF Smackdown. I can't decide which is worse..

My final thought for this post is that MeFi actually got 18 hits via my page. Maybe I'll start charging Matt for clickthroughs.

I think one of my molars is failing. I have an excellent dentist, I must pay him a visit.

My dental history is gruesome, and I have once again fallen off the ball. I neglected to go to a dentist for 10 years, and was welcomed to a world of cavities.

*disclaimer* I never had any pain in that time, and my teeth are white and pretty.*

A year ago I missed a cleaning appointment, and have never rescheduled. My molar is not causing me any pain, but the gum is sensitive, and the tooth itself has exposed dentin everywhere. This happens when you soak your teeth in cola acid 16 hours a day. Not desirable, not deadly.

Do you celebrate Halloween in your country Neale? Neale, are you friends with Anil? Could you convince him that I am a swell guy whose friendship would be desirable to have?

Following Rob's example, I have registered www.anilsfriendthirteen.net, and if this nonsexual friendship bears fruit I will make the page live and document our fascinating conversations, and archive any correspondence. 100 years ago, people could not do this.

Tomorrow is my last Japanese class, and I am supposing I will learn if my teacher considers me sufficiently competent to advance to the intermediate class. Wish me luck, unless you dislike me, then you should wish me ill will.

What become's a legend most?

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I've been at ye olde library. Now I'm all stinky and sweaty from hauling so many books away with me. Warm weather is lovely, but less so when one is carrying a book-filled backpack. It always impresses me just how heavy paper can be.
I'm with ya, thirteen. Today, I just had an astonishing number of MeFi threads that I actually wanted to post my drippy ramblings to.

Today's post-work used-CD quarry: Alice In Chains, Jar of Flies. I'm getting old. I'm listening to less new music and getting more concerned with replacing old cassettes with shiny new CDs. I must rage against the dying of the light.

The Beta Band has a new CD scheduled for release in early July. Cause for hope! (It's titled "Hot Shots II." They're such dicks.)

I'm taking a goddamn vacation in two weeks. One whole week off from work. I haven't had one in over two years, and I think it's driven me nuts (yeah, yeah, not a long trip, Skot, ah shaddup).

My awful show closes tomorrow night. Sweet Christ, what a release that will be. Thank the heavens that my girlfriend is an actress and understands the whole "See ya later!" aspect of being in a relationship with me.

It really is just a terrible show, and deserves mockery and scorn. To call it "crap" is to insult genuine, respectable feces. Okay, maybe I'm just a little bitter.

I miss playing "Adventure." Maybe I'll send Brad a conciliatory--if not outright bootlicking--email. Or card.

Okay, must go check out anilsfriendthirteen.net.

Dang. I can't think of appropriate national stereotypes for Canadians (other than a fondness for hockey and beer).

Skot, I keep asking people why Girl Scout uniforms aren't fetishized the way the whole "catholic schoolgirl" thing is, but no one has a definitive answer.

I think it's all due to the fact that, too often, Girl Scouts don't act the part of little hottie temptresses, luring us in with their not-so-innocent naughtiness.

Umm, what was the topic again?

Which was pretty goddamn funny.

i knew the moment i read that sentence, with the poster not listed on the screen, that it was my buddy, John 13. it just had that histrionic ring :-)

i also figured, from the man who doesn't have a URL for his own eponymous page, that he hadn't ponied up for anilsfriendthirteen.net

I was 99% certain that 13 hadn't ponied up either, Sean. But there was that niggling 1% of me that thought, "Well, he might just be that perverse." So I of course had to check.

She seemed aghast at a Canadian joke? Genuinely? How weird. The whole point of Canadian jokes is that it's nearly impossible to make a good one. Plus, most Canadians I've met tend to be terribly self-effacing anyway. (that's your worthless generalization for the day.)

I have no answers for the girl scout uniform/fetishization question, but am now also curious. I'm especially curious as to where you encounter these Lolita schoolgirls. As in, y'know, an address.

Oh, we're edging up to real trouble. I'm ashamed.

Ok, maybe aghast was overstating it. And also, maybe I took the joke a little too far. And perhaps I should have worn something under my overcoat.

Thirteen, my day is going a quiet kind of sublime, so far. I'm curious, why have I been befriended again? I forget, because I'm so anti-social I'm not used to parsing the whole friendship thing.

Today, I should have gotten my hair cut.

I was reading Maxim today, which I do rarely. It remains to be seen whether that's good or bad. But they had a list of fetishes which we (presumably) healthy, strapping, virile men are supposed to check off our personal lists. (Brad, some of these are straight-specific, so I apologize in advance. See also "Mikewas, Het Cred".)

They, of course, listed Nurse among the types, 13. But also cheerleader, friend's sister, teacher, boss, flight attendant, and a few more.

Get to work, fellas!

Brad, I don't want to inadvertantly trample Neale's opportunity to post the thread-closing comment. Can I post moves here now, or are you wanting to keep that a purely 1142 phenomenon?

This right here had me laughing in my chair.

I came into the office this morning, flipped on my monitor (I leave the PC running except over weekends) and was confronted with some horrendous blue screen of death. Chilling. But the reboot seemed fine. I have no idea what the problem was. A full page of nattering horseshit and mystifying symbols was what it all meant to me. I wish there was a "dumbass" setting on PCs so you could get error messages that at least spoke the truth. Like, say:

STOP! You fucked up.

You can't do that. To explain why would take hours, and you still wouldn't get it anyway. You'll just have to trust me. Or go ask your IT person how to do it.

That's not even a button right there. I don't know what you're trying to click.

OH FUCK! I don't know what you did or how you did it, but whatever it was just fucked this progam all to hell. I have to shut it down now. Don't do that any more, if you can remember what it was.

Sorry, your boss said you couldn't use this program. I don't even know why the icon is sitting there. I think it's a power thing.

Keep hitting that button if you want, but it doesn't do anything.

And, for truly massive Stupid Human Tricks:

OH FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. I fold. You're on your own.

The reasons that most Canadians are aghast at Canadian jokes is that you 'merkins are just so damned bad at them. You border-folk, see if you can't pick up the CBC on antenna and watch some of the stuff we do to ourselves.

I have a humourous Brownie (lowest Girl Guide level I believe, the Canadian Boy Scout equivalent is Beaver...) story, but can't quite remember it right now. I'll work on it, but it deals with sexual innuendo and drugs and my mother. Oh yes, it is pretty much the source of all my psychological problems. :-)

1142's not really going just yet. I couldn't figure out how to get to the database on Wednesday night, and that bugged me, so I gave up shortly after nine, ate, and went to bed.

Last night I wasted potentially productive brain cycles and watched Survivor. Tonight Jen and I went to see The Mummy Returns, effectively the sequel to our first date. It was nice of them to release it so close to the anniversary.

If you enjoyed the first one, you'll enjoy this one. A whole lot more fighting and action scenes, mostly well done. No Matrix parodies. Previews for Tomb Raider and Shrek.

The first twenty minutes are pretty much jam-packed with background plot as they frantically, and surprisingly effectively (though not quite effectively enough), explain the connection between the heroes, the bad guys, and the new bad guys.

I'm typing just way too damn much tonight. Feeling very talkative, and now that I think about it, sleepy.

Oh, and before I forget, tomorrow is 1142 day. Much work will be done (well, not all that much really, it's going to be minimally functional so that it can get off the ground and people can start making suggestions so I don't actually have to think for myself).

Also, I've gotten lots of e-mail about it. I haven't replied to any because I don't want to have to admit multiple times to not getting much done yet, but I'm 99.9% certain that everyone's getting the usernumber they requested.

I was so wrong! The statistics (as of this writing, up to date through June 1) indicate that the twentieth thread has only 105 comments, which means that this thread is above that total. OTOH, there are surely a few in the last month to top that figure.

What are the statistical probabilities that your heart could be stopped by a blast of lightning, restarted, then stopped years later by another bolt of lightning?

If your heart stopped beating and no one was around, would it make a sound?

What are the statistical probabilities that your heart could be stopped by a blast of lightning, restarted, then stopped years later by another bolt of lightning?
Given the continued rhythmic electrical conductance of the heart following the restarting procedure, the answer is:

About the same chance as being struck by lightning twice.

I dunno, Icy. I think if your heart is stopped once, the electromagnetic signature of the heart probably changes in a way that attracts all local lightning bolts. At least that's what I heard once from a friend who said he read a book a long time ago.

The Angry Gods of the Bog will not eat 13 this day. Today is ICE CREAM DAY! There will yet be time for 13 consumption in the days that follow.

Today's offering to The Angry Gods of the Bog is Dreamery Dulce de Leche. If The Gods are still hungry, there will be Dreamery Orchard Peach for afters.
