Sculptures? Does that mean that any photograph of something three dimensional is a sculpture?

No, sometimes it's a portrait or a film.

Very beautiful.
I would be curious to know what sort of inks he's using in these. The opacity, apparent weight, and relative lack of dispersion makes me wonder if he's using some type of printer's ink.

I've done some photography of emulsions using oil and water with food coloring. There is really an element of three-dimensional "sculpture" about manipulating the fluids to set up the ______* you're trying to get.

*Cannot for the life of me think of the word I'm looking for here, though I've used it repeatedly in the past few weeks. Related to the way one fluid flows into another. Darn senior moments.

Mingling works. I fear I've left it vague enough that there are a hundred words that could fit, but there's one specific one, a technical term used in fluid dynamics, that is bothering me.

Is it the Reynolds number or laminar flow? I know nothing about this; I just looked up hydrodynamics.. it's damn interesting.

Also, these are beautiful - exactly what I'd expect to see hanging on the walls if a squid invited me over for a cocktail party.

If you drill up, you can see more sets with this same technique. I thought this one was especially cool, with the streams of ink pouring into the layer below.

It looks like there's even more on his Flickr stream.

The Italian word he uses to describe the material he's using is "vernice" (see here), which may have been naively translated as "varnish", but the online translators tell me that it probably means "paint".

I've achieved similar effects shooting smoke. What really makes it work is the strong light. It enhances the dimensionality of the subject. I've thought about doing the liquid stuff, but you really need a pretty good sized tank with the ability to turn over the contents quickly and often (not a good combination with high intensity lights).
