Cameron to direct Prometheus 2?

James Cameron may direct 'Prometheus' sequel. In between diving to the bottom of the ocean, promoting Titanic 3D, and spinning up work on two Avatar sequels, the director lets slip that he has discussed doing a sequel to Ridley Scott's upcoming "Alien quasi-prequel" Prometheus. Whether that fills you with glee - because of Cameron's significant science fiction movie chops - or horror - because of Titanic, and, arguably, Avatar - is up to the reader. One could argue that Cameron would be obliged to hew to a tonal continuum between Prometheus and the first Alien movie, but on the other hand, he seems to delight in doing whatever the heck he wants.

And then after that, Fincher will direct Prometheus 3, and then Jeunet can direct a Whedon-penned Prometheus: Resurrection.

They're making a sequel to a prequel? Isn't that just a quel?

The only Avatar sequel worth mentioning is named "Korra".

This is what happens when The Guardian scrapes other stories without checking the date.

Oh.

May I just say that if you're going to put jokey stuff on your website for 4/1, that you also do the world a kindness and haul it down on 4/2?

Just wanted to check that the date on the article was the 2nd and not the 1st...

I am torn between film studios' tiresome dogged insistence on sequels and remakes and the inarguable fact that if anyone is right to do a sequel to a Scott Alienesque film it must be Cameron.

I was really happy when tar added a single-letter flag to decode those files.

I say let him do it only if he first promises to turn his Oscar over to Curtis Hanson.

Can I be filed with meh, because it's an announcement about a sequel to a movie that isn't out yet?

A friend gave me a perspective-changing observation about Cameron yesterday. I was poo-pooh-ing the Titanic remake, and my friend -- who's usually even more of an art snob than I am -- just shrugged and said "hey, I'm cool with that." I asked why, and he pointed out that Cameron basically uses all his money to fund his own undersea exploration programs -- "and so good, because hell, at least someone's doing it then."

....A fair point.

Oh damnit, Guardian, your film guys have been taken in AGAIN. I assumed that the Guardian having put this up as April 2nd meant I was clear of Fools shenanigans. Gah.

Note in Uncle Ira's link, not only is the date April 1st, but the last line is "Source: Prometheus Forum." So, rock solid fact checking from the Grauniad yet again... sigh. And I got taken for a ride.

Maybe he could build a fire, sing a couple of songs....

Anyway, I made this joke on twitter before anyone else, so there...

(You have no idea how many people told me it should actually be Promethei, which isn't as funny at all)

Will William Gibson write Prometheus 3 about monks on a wooden planet?
