It doesn't support the massager springboard module, how can you have proper phone sex with this thing?

Looks neat, but I've been enjoying my Kyocera Smartphone for several months now. The Treo looks like it might be smaller (good for the phone aspect), but the Smartphone size is nice for the Palm interface. I'm interested in the color screen of the Treo 270 series, though.

Is this like a 2-way wireless pager where you can send and receive short text messages/email without it dialing out?

Which might well lead us to wonder: what of preo, qreo, rreo, and sreo? Are there undiscovered intermediate steps between cookie and pda?

Oh, Sweet Jesus in Heaven. I just saw this on the Handspring site and bolted over to MeFi to post it for the gadget geeks and lo and behold, Jacknose beat me to it.

I want one of those. No--I NEED one of those. The color one.

I'm hyperventilating. I have to sit down.

Wait! Where's the fucking expansion slot?! I ain't dropping $$ on this thing if I can't use all of my expansion modules. Dammit, dammit, dammit.

Maybe they'll put a built in EyeModule in the color one...Pleeeeeze!

Doesn't support any Springboard modules, just to be clear.

you can send and receive short text messages/email without it dialing out?

If it's the same as the VisorPhone, then no.

Vaio

Samsung has something like this already - and by the looks of it, is better too.

Anyways, personal preference I guess: but I'd rather buy a single full functional phone AND a single full functional PDA, rather than a hybrid with partly functional aspects of each. Sure, the convenience of carrying around one unit is great, but I guess I subscribe to "don't put all your eggs in one basket".

It's kind of like the watch with a built-in cellphone. Why bother? I already have a cell phone with a watch built in.

How about a TV/phone though?

Damn. That thing is ugly.

I'll take the edge/phone combo over this... and what's up with that keyboard!

No expansion slot... Ugly keyboard... Bulbuous flip cover...

Ew. Ew. Ew.

Thank god, finally I can throw out that pesky cell phone I bought a year ago and now they're giving away, and I can throw out the stupid palm I bought 18 months ago and finally I can get the newest coolest gadget which should do me for at least 6 months before they come out with one that also kneads my buttocks or something.

...one that also kneads my buttocks or something.

Coming soon . . . the Nedo (or Butto). Believe me, I would buy a PDA that would knead my buttocks. No doubt, it would be the ultimate PDA.

Me too. I would glady pay someone to knead my buttocks in public. Oh. . . not that kind of PDA? Oops.

Cheerio. Or, if you're willing to give a bit of slack, Cheerios

Back on topic...I'm not a big Palm OS fan (Compaq IPAQ 4 me!), but this product looks pretty good. Heard the press release today jacked up Handspring's stock, too. I'll wait until the PPC version arrives, though.

An open sourced PDA can be made to do almost anything.

what's up with that keyboard!

It's a Crackberry-style thumb keyboard. If you prefer Graffiti, a version of the Treo with that is also available (same price).

I was the copywriter that worked on ads for the Eo, the Newton-competing PDA eventually bought by Apple. It weighed about 3 pounds and had ears (frogdesign, I believe). One ad asked, "How do you please a fat cat from a gondola?" Leave it to the client to pick the throwaway comp.

So, yes, jacknose, there are other product names that end in 'o,' and they're even in the same category.

I use a Visor Deluxe and am not amazed. Looks like a kick-ass PDA for the non-tech. I suppose that isn't a bad thing, really...

I dislike the look of the keyboard. Not nearly as cute and nifty as a thumbscript solution (incidentally, has anyone here ever seen or used a thumbscript device? -- just curious). The form factor of the TREO isn't much different than my current phone, though it does seem a bit wide...and that could lead to some handling problems.

Glad to see someone is at least attempting to move things forward with something like this.
