Another great use: you can find spooky Halloween sounds! I just typed howl in the engine, and got plenty o'hits back. Interesting!

We use this engine in our psycholinguistics lab when we need enivormental sounds. It's very handy.

It's more on the pro end (that is, it costs money), but SoundDogs is pretty damn thorough. They're the guys who make "The General" and many other SFX collections one finds lurking in edit suites.
