Looking MARVELous is a tumblr that provides comic book-inspired fashion based on Marvel comic book characters. You'll find not only popular characters, like Spider-man or Iron Man. Some of the inspired outfits come from lesser-known characters such as Squirrel Girl (who?) and Molly Hayes (umm?). Here is the full page version.

I have to say that considering the depths they are plumbing with character choices -- Anti-Venom? Really? I mean, that's a pretty swell outfit but, Anti-Venom? Really? -- I am wondering if the target audience for this actually exists. Also, regarding the Ant-Man outfit: didn't Hank Pym have that whole domestic abuse subplot?

Considering there are near 200 posts, in order to minimize doubles, I think they have to dig pretty deep. Of course, I consider this a feature, not a bug.

I am wondering if the target audience for this actually exists. Yes, and it is ME. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Ant-Man outfit is based on the current one, not Pym--there have been three, you know.

...it's a website that has outfits that resemble the color schemes and general ideas of what superheroes wear, not a cosplay manual. Plus, there's a surprising variety of sources; every outfit seems to be a combination of fast fashion stuff like the Gap, quality-made stuff, and then hilariously (over)priced Important Name stuff. That Anti-Venom outfit, for instance, has a pair of Christian Louboutin price-upon-request (probably) shoes and a $4900 necklace paired with $48 jeans. The Klara Prast one has $390 True Religion jeans with a pair of $35 Vans.

The collages appear to be assembled with Polyvore, a pinteresty site for making fashion collages. Cursory inspection suggests you're restricted to working with items Polyvore has uploaded.

Now we're getting somewhere. Molly Hayes defeated both Punisher and Wolverine, and she pulled off Cloak's cloak. I'd pay good money to watch her fight with Squirrel Girl.

No, you'd pay good money to see a description of Molly Hayes talking about how badly she got beat by Squirrel Girl off-panel. The fact that you (almost) never see the fights is the point of the character.

Eh, I get what psycho-alchemy's getting at. Many of these outfits are on the bland side, all more or less the same style, and don't really evoke the characters in question other than a color scheme and token accessory. To my mind a really good "stealth cosplay" outfit should make you think, "Yes, [Character] would absolutely wear that if they were a trendy, slender young woman!" (Optional aside: "...Okay, that's weird to think about.") I do like the afore-mentioned Namor one and Hercules, though! And props for the obscurity quotient -- forget cult favorites like Squirrel Girl and the Runaways, they did Zzzax?! On a similar note, CollegeFashion has a running Geek Chic series in which one of their bloggers puts together outfits based on various SFF fandoms. Some are definitely better than others, but I particularly liked her Hunger Games and Doctor Who sets. There's also Disneybound, which doesn't always hit it out of the park (er, no pun intended) but definitely has some fun outfits like Tiana and the Incredibles (holiday party version). For ground-up superhero inspired original designs my favorites are megarinri (possibly nsfw, as there are some lingerie designs) and Hanie Mohd, though. Hanie's superheroes in sweaters series has made the rounds of a number of geek websites already. Kat/Megarinri's work hasn't spread so far, but she's done some fantastic costume --> civvies translations, like Wonder Woman, Impulse and Wiccan. The best blog for following the comics + fashion intersection is definitely Betty Felon's Fashion Tips from Comic Strips. I'm kind of terrified I was able to generate three-and-a-bit paragraphs on this topic. But hey! I love comics and fashion and wish the two would intersect more often, so this post is right up my alley.

I feel like I'm misunderstanding how this works, but why is noone wearing the clothes? Why isn't their a link to an image of the source character? The outfits are created using polyvore, which is an outfit creation/inspiration site where you can "clip" clothing items from other websites and collage them together. So there are no models unless you clip a photo of a model wearing the clothing item you want. However, for what I'm assuming are rights issues, polyvore blocks clipping on a lot of non-shopping websites (google, blogspot, etc) which can make adding images of the characters themselves a little difficult.

Related, here is the tumblr an actual designer that makes actual clothes based on comic book characters, as well as video game and manga characters. The stuff is actually pretty cool. Here is his Wolverine hoodie. A lot of it is racer-chic hoodie and jacket designs, but definitely no garish character prints. I like this Assassins Creed hoodie.

I appreciate that there are Molly Hayes fans out there, but do you know how awesome Squirrel Girl is? Do you? Well, let me tell you: no matter what the circumstances, Doreen would find a way for her and Molly not to fight, and they'd become best friends forever and utterly defeat whatever forces tried to set them against each other. That's how awesome. let me just warn you right now, in case you hadn't guessed, I'm not entirely rational on this subject. seriously.
