Holi Hi-Def

We have covered Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, on Metafilter before. But we have not yet done it in slow-mo HD [SLV].

By the production company Variable, who seem to be using this as a demo reel. Discovered via thekidsshouldseethis.com

Holi has always looked like so much fun to me. I am apparently not alone in this thinking, as someone has crossed Holi with a 5K.

"Holi: Revenge of the Colors" from director Michael Bay. Coming soon to a theater near you.

Every time I see this festival, I think "It looks pretty, but how does it taste?"

P.S. I love you and all, but [SLV] doesn't mean what you think it means.

Huh. I had to look up what you meant on Urban dictionary. This is the first I've heard of that meaning. It's been an acronym for "Single Link Video (Vimeo)" around here for a while.

...or are you noting that the post included more than a single link, which would be a fair critique. The rest is mostly padding though :)

Like nothing, or perhaps baby powder. I was at this year's Phagwah in Queens, which is North America's biggest Holi celebration (parades, floats, a big party - largely Indo-Caribbean), and I was sneezing rainbows for weeks. Aunties trying to bless you will sometimes get half the powder in your mouth when putting it on your face. Baby powder is also used to shower people with.

That's still better than the Holi parties of my childhood, where they would mix the powder with crushed mica to make it beautiful and sparkly. Yes, beautiful and sparkly - with MICA IN YOUR EYES.

But seriously, if you get a chance, drop by a Holi party. It's a festival of life, you don't need to have any particular reason to participate.

"It looks pretty, but how does it taste?"

Like milk mixed with crushed almonds and pistachio, flavoured with bhang.

I have had no idea for so many years this was what the song referred to.
I've learnt something today.

It tastes like a variety of things: happiness while running with your friends, victory & defeat, a mother's concerned looks, a father's worry about the back-seat of his van, the black that pools at the bottom of your tub when you get home from temple.

Ok, you can't taste some of those things but trust me, it's all there.

Baby powder is often made from talc. You don't want to inhale that stuff, it doesn't degrade and doesn't come out.
