Venice is one of my favorite cities, but this tilt-shift time-lapse makes clear how silly it really is. Venice is a small child in a bathtub, playing with boats.

I was all, "Oh, been there, done that, made the time-lapse". And then I, like, played the video.

Very very nice. I really like Venice. I'm surprised how well I remember it, after only a long weekend. It's one of those classic tourist destinations that is honestly worth the trip.

Anyone who loves Venice and detective fiction should read the Donna Leon series featuring Inspector Brunetti. Now on it's 21st book and everyone of them like a quick return trip to Venice. Lots of fascinating insights into the daily lives of Venetians and their attitude to the (now) 2O+ million visitors per year.
Great post, thanks.

They should really slow down. Someone could get hurt.

Homesick. It used to be empty of tourists in the winter, but now the only alone time is at acqua alta, with wellingtons and away from Piazza San Marco.

Beautiful! It makes me wish the maker would go around the world and do all the major cities, for those of us who love Sunday morning armchair travelling. Thanks for the cool FPP, HuronBob!

@pink: if you look at the guy's other films on vimeo you'll find a couple more.

Very nice, but is every video on Vimeo a time-lapse tilt-shift piece?

Some are in black and white.

A really nice video, but two things: 1) The fakey tilt-shift blurs out the beautiful sunset at the end, and 2) Couldn't he have found some Vivaldi, rather than that generic movie music?

If this inspires you to visit, my Venice tips:

Suitcases with rollers, no. Backpacks.

Try to rent a so-called holiday apartment if you can, rather than a hotel, but then try to find one not on the ground floor (rising damp and acqua alta and such). In other words, there's a good chance that the cheaper holiday apartments will be on the ground floor, and the more expensive ones not.

If you're looking for a bit of the local flavor, an enoteca without any tables inside is a good sign. Go there, drink Valpolicella.

Do not sit down for coffee (this applies to other cities in Italy as well).

If you like beer, campo Santa Margherita is good.

Venice local fare is in part big on fish and veg. Go for salt cod dishes, for instance.

Do your best to get lost.

... except if you can get the balcony table at Caffè Poliziano in Montepulciano.

Do your best to get lost.

Are you joking? That is ALL you can do in Venice.

Better advice: try to know where you are at least twice.
