Jon Will's Gift

When Jonathan Frederick Will was born 40 years ago — on May 4, 1972, his father’s 31st birthday — the life expectancy for people with Down syndrome was about 20 years. That is understandable. The day after Jon was born, a doctor told Jon’s parents that the first question for them was whether they intended to take Jon home from the hospital.
The story of Jon Will presented as a column in today's Washington Post.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is like three quarters nice little photo essay by a dad about his son who he cares about and one quarter really jarring ABORTION SHAME ON YOU ENTITLED JERKS stuff sandwiched in there and as much as I like the idea of a nice photo essay that makes for kind of a weird stealth op-ed post. -- cortex
I read this and was unpleasantly surprised when George Will turned it into a dig at pro-choice.
Then I remembered, duh, it's George Will.

I had a cousin with Down syndrome, born in the '30's, who lived into his 50s. I am certain it was because of the loving care his mother (my great-aunt) lavished on him every day of his life.

Well, before there was science, people would kill a deformed infant after birth. Is that better?
