It's Upsettingly Cool

Renaissance man of animated comedy and heavy metal music Brendon Small sits down with Gibson for a four part interview to discuss his writing process, the new season of Metalocalypse, working with Gibson to create the Gibson Dethklok Thunderhorse Explorer, and the release of his debut solo album Galaktikon, of which Small says, This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end.

So, it's a Coheed And Cambria cover album, then.

Man, I miss Home Movies. It's nice they've all had cameos on Bob's Burgers.

A Gibson copy of an ESP copy of a Gibson. Brilliant!

Slap somebody's name on an Explorer Pro and you can charge an extra $600 for it.

Um, this sounds awesome. Power metal that doesn't take itself too seriously is the best. I've loved the Dethklok albums, I'm looking forward to this.

i'm actually starting to get a little worn out with things that "don't take themselves seriously", myself

It's the ones who insist that you should take them seriously because they don't take themselves seriously that irritate me.

Thirteen-dimensional metal chess, man.

And $2800 for a guitar? What, does it morph into naked Joan Jett or something?

The more Brendan Smalls the better, as far as I'm concerned. I thought the Deathklok albums were fantastic... sure, not entirely "serious," but metal has always had more than it's share of ridiculousness, most of it more conscious then we might normally imagine.

It comes with a $600 surcharge for extra irony and unseriousness.

But $2800 MSRP for an Explorer is nothing. An original Explorer will set you back $250k at least. $2800 for a decent Gibson is nothing. I often lament selling my 1961 Les Paul Jr. for $350, the same as I paid for it. If I wanted to buy one now, I'd pay $5600 minimum. And this was originally sold as the cheap, low end student grade model.

There are a lot of reissue Explorers on the used market. I think a lot of great guitarists go through an embarrassing heavy metal Explorer stage and then grow out of it.

This post led me to rediscover his rock-opera adaptation of Tron. So thanks for that.

Oh god that was horrible on so many levels. And that is the first web page that ever managed to hijack my Safari cursor. I must increase my security measures. And maybe add an audio limiter to avoid losing more of my hearing to shrill screaming WOO idiots in the audience who are standing too close to the recorder.

He's no Wendy Carlos. But then, neither was Walter.
