More background: the piece is written by the keyboardist from the band Girls, and the magazine is run by Bethlehem Shoals, the former proprietor of FreeDarko basketball blog. It's better than Grantland.

minor derail: is that the actual etymology of "baller"? Makes sense if it is. Urban dictionary seems to think so. Wordnik doesn't have much to say on the matter.
