Huh, interesting- I was getting a shot of espresso Friday night when something very intriguing started playing on the speakers at Vivace; I asked the barista what it was, she asked the guy in back, and he said "A mixtape by 'The Avalanches'". I can't recall it exactly in my head, but it sounded like a cover of another song, but in a quasi-a cappella way, but with backing beats/instrumentation. This thread reminded me to look into that- but it sounds like he was talking about the "previous mixtape" mentioned by EMRJKC'94? Where/how do I go about finding this "previous mixtape", because that link sounds like they've released a bunch of impromptu singles, but not as a formal collection.

Well, Gimix is loads of fun - basically their last album mixed with all sorts of stuff (Hendrix, Dylan, Michael Jackson, Hall and Oates, etc.). They also did a couple of Breezeblock sets around that time which are also pretty ace, although if I recall less heavy on the Avalanches' own material. Also, I don't mean to rain on anyone else's parade, but I think Frontier Psychiatrist doesn't compare to the actual album highlights, and it bums me out a bit that this is what everyone associates with them. Compare, for instance, Live at Dominoes.

Anything containing a big chunk of "Meditations" is fine with me, but I think it used the Claudine Longet version instead of the Astrud Gilberto vocal, a sign that this "Sleepy Bedtime Mix" will be 80% cheesiness, and dairy does NOT help me sleep. And "Kites Are Fun" is one the few haven't-heard-in-a-million-years songs that only brings back pleasant memories.

What's sort of funny to me about this mix is that it's about 80% matched to what's already in my playlist on my computer here at work, to the point that I thought I'd accidentally closed the window and started iTunes playing in the background. Paused it, investigated, started it up again, listened for a long time, then said, out loud, "what the hell, Avalanches? Get out of my head!"
