Calling All Pod People: there's a car for you! "This concept car explores the potential for communication between people and their vehicle," Toyota said in preview information released on Thursday. I don't want to communicate with machines (using machines to communicate with other people is more my style). What is it about Japanese culture that produces all these machine-human "relationships"? Tamagotchi, Aibo, NeCoRo, ad nauseam.

BTW - it was incredibly irritating that the Yahoo link minimized the main browser window, and opened a new window for the fucking camera ad. That is just rude behavior.

This has the potential for riotous comedy about human emotional responses to inscrutable machines, a la Red Dwarf.

Wow, that car looks like a VW Beetle pushed through a garlic press...or Voltron's kidney stone.

My Aiwa stereo says me "good-bye" when I turn it off.

I guess that goes a long way in explaining the Japanese perception on how human-machine relationships should be.

They're trying to "humanize" the technology and make it seem, well, less mechanical. The stereo that says "goodbye" is a smaller example. Very Japanese.

The Japanese have a fundamentally different view of technology than Americans do. When an American speaks of his stereo system, he is likely to talk about how flat the frequency response is, how tight the bass is, and how precise the soundstage is. A Japanese is more likely to talk about how listening to music on his system makes him feel.

A friend at work has a new Chevy Trailblazer. Both he and his wife have seperate alarm triggers, so that when one unlocks the car, it begins to adjust for who the driver will be - seats move, the stereo changes stations, the mirrors adust. All that's missing is a soothing synthetic voice saying "Welcome, Ferd". My friends loves it - all he has to do is get in and drive.

I think people have always had a relationship with their cars. Now the cars are starting to relate back.
