"Cockfosters"

Apparently the direction I take the Piccadilly line to get into town from Heathrow. Good to see it has many uses.

I was chuckling away pretty consistently but at "He celebrates by giving hand jobs to ghosts" I regret to say that I lost control of my orifices, fore and aft.

Basketball needed this treatment. Seriously. Shittest game in the universe.

So it's funny because he's a Brit ignorant about basketball playing a Brit ignorant about basketball? Or he's actually a Brit who knows the game but is playing a Brit ignorant about basketball? Maybe I'm just grumpy pre-coffee, but I don't get it.
posted by zardoz at 1:49 PM on May 23, 2012

The basketball ignorance is part of the joke, yes. But I think it's more a parody of the constant stream of forced catchphrases, metaphors, odd cultural references, and song snippets that are the trademark of any hyperactive basketball commentator. If you play sports video games for any length of time and have heard all of the commentary snippets a thousand times, the blatant absurdity of that style of sportscasting becomes part of the fun.

This reminds me of watching the NFL on Sky Network. they used American announcers through most of the game, so at first I wouldn't even notice any difference. But every time there was a pause in the action (which, being NFL, happens frequently) they'd go to this commentators desk staffed by a couple Americans and one lone British guy. The British guy's job was to explain, in British terms, what was happening. I never realized how complex American football was until I heard someone desperately trying to explain it to the folks back home - in Manchester.

Me too on the "hand jobs to ghosts" line.

That's not quite painting the full picture.

The British commentators are usually either an English guy who was a kicker in the NFL or a rugby player. The Americans are either retired NFL nobodies or still active nobodies who have been banished to England in all likelihood for some unmentioned transgression that pissed off the NFL head office. None of them want to be there at all. Oh and it is 3 am in the morning and the forecast say there is a good chance of rain.
