Martin Creed: Die

Turner prize winning artist Martin Creed (prev) has a broad conception of what constitutes art - viz. two contemporary projects: 1. He wants all people to ring bells to mark next month's opening of the 2012 Olympic Games. 2. He has a new single half of which is called 'Die'. The other half of the title is NSFW, as is Josh Appignanesi's video for 'Die', which contains even more moving flesh than the average music video.

I think all people turning on their webcams and pointing them at someone else would be more in keeping with the spirit of these games.

Obligitory Meme

The "All the bells" thing seems like it's either the most banal thing ever or a post-ironic comment on banality of civic inanity.

Quite looking forward to ringing a bell with all of Britain, which I think is a brilliant idea. You people can take your cynical sneering, your too-cool-for-school posturing and your post-ironic meta-whatever and SIT ON IT. None of you know what bells MEAN to Great Britain: Alexander Graham Bell, a Scot, actually invented the bell, and Princess Diana was the "Belle of the ball", and in this country if someone calls you a "Bell-End" that means you're really great. That's what people tell me anyway and they call me that ALL THE TIME. Oh, also Ringo was one of the Beatles and what do you do with a bell? You "George it". He was also a Beatle.

An early episode of Weeds had this great track over the closing credits. I was surprised to learn it was by Martin Creed.

I think Creed kinda went downhill after "With Eyes Wide Open."

I really like his work a lot.. one of the best of his generation, imo. Apart from his numbered works, his performances, which often include his band (music), are wonderful as well.

here is a video where he describes work No. 1059 where we get a snipper of his music..

Creed went to Slade, and besides it was before the introduction of tuition fees.

I think any artist doing art about the Olympics that doesn't scathingly criticise them is abdicating their artistic duty.

Perhaps some could make the ringing sounds by dropping coins on the ground. Or by banging pots and pans. . It strikes me that there are a number of ways to both participate in this group activity and still make a point.

Have a look here at the full poem and its historical references..

I do not think that Mr Creed is embracing the Olympics with an ode to joy..

I know his parents. They're both incredibly amusing and creative, and it's no surprise that Martin comes out with this daftly challenging stuff.
