I think the easiest trick in that vid was a nollie heelflip varial. Ow.

Wow, those were fantastic. Thanks for the video!

Never seen the Merlin Twist before. Good to see people are still innovating.

Stick around for the actual-speed footage at the end! Amazing skill.

A nice little lesson in classical mechanics.

Amazing what we can teach our bodies to do. Or, maybe, discover what they're capable of (especially if we're willing to fall down a lot in the process).

Those (especially us old farts) who aren't/weren't involved somehow with skating (either ourselves or our kids) have little idea how much skill and practice it takes, this illustrates it nicely. Perhaps requiring the complainers to watch this might result in a little less "get off my lawn sidewalk!" ...great video..thanks.

I watched this earlier today and was amazed. Even as someone who has spent 2 decades skating, it's incredible to see all the finer points of the things your feet do.

Not to mention the fact that the tricks these dudes are doing are really really innovative and new. This particular style is the first thing I've seen in a long while that looks like it could revolutionize street skating. For so long it's seemed like innovations come in the form of multipliers (kickflips turned into doubles, then triples, 360 flips, etc...), but this is some new shit. I think I'll set aside some time this week to skate.

Really, it's just looked like 1993 to me. Small wheels, narrow boards, varial flips, all on level ground. All your missing is like, really dopey, baggy jeans and kids had Hi-8 cameras with shitty fisheye lenses, none of this HD stuff.

Or, err, Rodney Mullen dumbed down, in any point of his competitive career.

Oh man, I did not watch the full speed footage until just now. Wow.

The fella 2:20-2:21 is insane. I can't even wrap my head around a flip trick that requires bouncing the edge of the tail off the ground like that. I'm pretty jealous right now.

The backside no comply 360 is awesome, too. the no comply has been one of my favorite things ever for a long long time (they are just so much fun to do) and this particular variation is executed so perfectly here. Awesome.

No idea if these are the height of the sport, but somehow 1000 fps is still not slow enough for my brain to grok how the hell so many signals can be brought together in physical stunts. Is it more complicated than, for example, than the conceited spoon-lifting-to-lips I do with soup?

As someone who can barely walk across flat ground without tripping, I'm so jealous and astounded. These guys are so coordinated and flexible, their timing is amazing, and that they practice and practice on unforgiving pavement is brutal. (I just got dumped off my horse the other day. Falling hurts!)

Amazing. Makes me kinda wish I hadn't taken a pass on getting into skateboard culture back when.

Probably not. The fact that it requires skill and practice doesn't have much to do with the damage it causes to surfaces that aren't built to be skating platforms. Skilled or not, stay off my walk, stairs, railing, etc.

It's a really cool video, though. Thanks for posting.

Dude, I was hoping for some kind of laser flip in there, but--as much as it hurts my fingers to type this--I guess lasers are kind of passé in 2012?!

The Warhol version of this is a 1000 fps video of nothing but manuals.

Been skating off and on for decades and these crazy flipping tricks always escaped me. I can't tell the difference between most of them at full speed, so it's very cool to see what's happening for once!
posted by orme at 6:06 PM on June 2, 2012

even in slow motion I can't tell WTF is happening.

I love skating, these days I just like to throw down huge ollies going real fast downhil. Them yung'uns can do that fancy stuff, me, I just crack a HUUUUUUGE ollie. A grey-haired, old guy, big ass, going fast, impressive to the yung'uns, ollie.

Gotta keep my cred where I can y'know?

aw man... when I was 18, 19, whatever, I spent days, weeks, no MONTHS fucking around in parking lots trying to coordinate a decent kickflip. They. Are. Fucking. DIFFICULT. I never so much as could reliably land a simple backside kickflip... I mean I could ollie over a goddamed fire hydrant but I couldn't land the simplest kindergarten level kickflip 10 out of 10 tries. yes, I suck. You need extremely clever feet and a decent tolerance for (or at least indifference to) landing awkwardly on pavement repeatedly whilst learning.

... which is why I rapidly lost interest in skating and concentrated on bike racing instead.

Any sufficiently advanced skateboard trick is indistinguishable from magic.
