Ahye Matey! He's mean and one-eyed and known simply as "unidentified translator" .

He's the translator-attache of, and in this case attached to, the Taliban's representative to Pakistan. Given that the Taliban only keeps in an embassy in PK, this is probably their best simultaneous two-way translator. Wowwa!

I like the shot of the ambassador poking him in the head...Just to let people see that the Taliban can get wacky about public execultions for minor moral slip-ups! Har har har!

The new Bert, definitely. Can't wait for him to turn on Bush's reelection poster.

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting *real* tired of all that facial hair?

Am I the only one who thinks "Klingons" when he sees these pix? Militant, much? Wow.

Excuse me? You've given me no context. As far as I can tell from this thread, you got these pix from one of those ripoff collections sold to very bad web designers whose job it is to sell crap to us all.

well gee, realjanet, once you learn how to work that browser, you'll find that most links have URLs, and they appear in your status bar and your location bar. and they tell you where you are, and where the pictures are, and all sorts of neato keen geeky stuff like that.

Funny, I've seen it reported that Mullah Umar (sp?) lost an eye during the war against the Soviets, but I guess that reporter was in error.

You've given me no context

Context 1

Context 2: "You think you can catch Keyser Soze? You think a guy like that comes this close to getting caught, and sticks his head out?"

I can't heeeeeear you...

Mullah Umar did lose his eye in combat. Evidently most of the Taleban top brass is some how or other impaired physically. Ministers with one leg, or one hand or one arm or both legs either shot, or bombed or may be damged by land mines. Kinda shows what happens during carpet bombings. Where ever u hide u get sharpnel in some part of ure body.

Ha ha! Good to see others have found this guy to be interesting...in some fashion. On my site (it's ok to link to one's own site in comments, yes?), I noted the uncanny resemblance between this translator and Street Fighter's Sagat. It's about 2 page-downs down. It's uncanny, I tell ya.

Frankly, I think the Hathaway Shirt Man has really gone to seed since the company went belly-up last year.

stbalbach: Thanks for the links. I had the same "Wow, pirates!" reaction to the photos that you did. (I confess it: I collected them all.) More thanks for adding the context, because I always like to know what I'm *really* looking at, whenever it's possible. I'm sorry if I seemed rude to you by asking for context. I didn't mean to. I've always loved Urban Legends and, given the stuff that shows up in my inbox these days, I now begin my morning with a quick check of Snopes *before* I read my e-mail. I only wanted to find out where these pix were coming from. I'm sorry if I phrased it badly. I adore pirates and I thank you for the addition to my collection.

quonsar: For what it's worth, the first thing I did when I saw the photos was to try back-clipping the browser urls, because I have learned enough to know that doing that often leads me to an index page that leads me to other really interesting stuff. In the case of the initial links here, however, I got nothing but a great many boring Yahoo 404s. I'm sorry I'm not geeky enough for you...yet. ---But, in your honor, I googled "one-eyed translator"--- and I spent the rest of the afternoon reading page after page of fascinating tales. For that, I thank you. So when I do get to your level of geekiness, I hope I'll think of you fondly and just stop by to say, "Hello, and thanks for all the 'one-eyed translators'."
