Muslim makes bin Laden a laughing matter. "My name is Shazia Mirza - at least that's what it says on my pilot's licence." It seems The Onion isn't the only one healing through comedy.

Shazia Mirza (teacher by day and comedienne by night) is following the same dual-career path as America's Kate Clinton, now celebrating her 20th year in comedy. As my favorite Clinton has said, "Being a teacher is the same as being a comic, you work the room. You learn to deal with hecklers. You plan a show. And you try things to get laughs."

What a cool woman. I'm subscribe to the school of thought that James Thurber so eloquently described:

"...humor in a living culture must not be put away in the attic with the flag, but should be flaunted, like the flag, bravely. Every time is a time for comedy in a world of tension that would languish without it."

waffleboy: Damme but that's the best Thurber quote ever (given the times). Where's that from, if you remember?

I won't be upset if you don't. My subconscious often calls up the right quote at the right time, but it all too often takes a month thereafter to tell me which book it found that right quote in.

Thanks.

rjk,

I found it at The Thurber House but so far I haven't been able to find the original source. A lovely quote, though, isn't it?

More James Thurber (New York Post, February 29, 1960):

"Humor is emotional chaos remembered in tranquility."

"It's great to be here in Peoria. So, anyone here from Kabul? (laughs) No, no, I'm serious, I was just wondering how far those refugee camps had gotten. (rimshot). So anyway, why did the Afghani dissident cross the road? To escape the roving death squads! I'm here all week, folks."

Allah help us all..

:) Heh, think I may pop up to Birmingham to check it.. When you come to think of it, it is kinda a silly image to picture Bin Laden sitting in that cave with a coupla thousand billion dollars of US army after him, trimming that beard of his..
