and you shall have your MTV What goes into a great music video? Did this format explode and die spectacularly all at once in the 80's like a supernova? Submitting as evidence Blitzen Trapper Black River Killer the music video is most definitely not dead.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Maybe do this slightly over without the "I linked to the same video twice" and without the rhetorical question stuff? It's a nice video, as videos go, but is there something that makes it something for MetaFilter? -- jessamyn

Having now watched the video, I'd say it isn't so much that it's a good video but that it's a competent video that had something to work with in the lyrics. So many songs are content-free and this one actually had some meat so they could do something with it.

Since both of those links go to the same video, maybe we can add Furr as another creative example - again, much to work with in the lyrics.

It's dead because no one can top this

Did you intend to link the same thing twice?

As for the video.... I've liked the song quite a bit since grabbing the record but I'd say the video exemplifies what I hate about music videos, especially those from the 80s. It's just a visual interpretation of the lyrics. Yes, the video has a few filmmaking flourishes but mostly, it's just too on the nose. I'd argue that the images taint the song in ways I wish it didn't.
