Ditching School to Whistle is a delightful 15-minute look at some absolutely amazing whistlers who converge yearly on the little town of Louisburg, North Carolina. To whistle.

All I can say is I have to bring this entire crew to Key West for the Southernmost Whistlers Competition. PS Whistling Tom.

I am a compulsive whistler. By friends and loved ones, I have long been known as the best whistler around. I now know that I have no idea how to whistle.

I am terrible at whistling (recently expanded my range to... just under an octave), but still do it all the time. Very interesting, the woman who (1) does it to calm anxiety and (2) can do double-tone! Thanks for the post!

The woman who does the two tone self harmonising whistle. Is that really real?
[My attempts to listen to this were partly drowned out by a nightingale singing in the tree outside my open window. Co-incidence you say?]

Sounds like the title of an efterklang song.

That's pretty cool. Not as crazy as falling in love with the Eiffel Tower video, but another niche area that I didn't know about before Metafilter. That kid's gonna go places- between the whistling and film-making!

Great story! They hit the nail on the head when they said there's something about whistling that's just happy.
And when I think of a whistled tune that makes me happy, I think of Toots Thielmans' Bluesette.

Did you know that James Whistler's father worked on railroad systems in the early days of steam transportation and invented a system of communication between the locomotive engineer and the train crew, known as 'Whistler's Trumpet'? It was eventually shortened to 'Whistler's', or 'whistle'.

That was excellent. I'm a whistler. I'm not particularly good but I just can't help it.

The world needs us whistlers. Too much blood, too much greed. We can clean it up.
Wonderful film.

I played a solo whistling show in Vienna in March. Not much like what these folks do, but I'm 100% in favor of whistling across the board.
