Sigur Ros starring Shia LaBeouf

Fjögur Píanó [NSFW, nudity] is the first released video from an upcoming project titled "Mystery Film Experiment," which is a collection of music videos for Sigur Rós' latest album, Valtari. Each video is being made by different filmmakers. "With the films, we have literally no idea what the directors are going to come back with. None of them know what the others are doing, so it could be interesting."

The first video is directed by Alma Har'el and stars Shia LaBeouf and Denna Thomson.

A short story.

A man and a woman locked in a never ending cycle of addiction and desire.

Slowly losing their ability to separate themselves from each other, they try to hold on to dead fleeting moments as they mark the days passing them by.

The other artists and directors signed on for the project include: Nick Abrahams, Arni & Kinski, Ramin Bahrani, Melika Bass, Inga & Lilja Birgisdottir, Sarah Hopper, Clare Langan, Henry Jun Wah Lee, Ryan McGinley, John Cameron Mitchell and Dash Shaw.

I think this video is beautiful. I love the choreography. The thing I find most extraordinary though is Shia's ability to express a non-Transformers related emotion.

He's no Fassbender.

I am so ready for more Sigur Ros. Thanks for the post.

Well, now that we've gotten the obligatory penis comment out of the way...

This is a typically lovely and provocative video. I personally can't wait for the John Cameron Mitchell installment.

I'm a big Sigur Ros fan (S.R. and Beck I have seen twice in the last five years. I'm 60 and don't get around much anymore, as Sir Duke put it. Some artists, though, get my heart going.) But this video, which I ruminated upon when my kid sent it to me a few days ago, doesn't do much for me. Combining dance/music with narrative is not easy, and when it goes awry - like this does - it comes across as well-meaning but too artsy for me. Plus, the minimalism of the soundtrack is not enough to keep me interested. I understand its origin in Sigur Ros's music, but, still...

When did Sigur Ros lose the annoying singer? Is the whole album instrumental?

This video is great when you download it, then play it in VLC at 3x playback speed, although it still seems slowed down to me.

Totally didn't recognize Shia LaBeouf, though. (insert 'actual cannibal' joke)

Actually, "thanks for this post" is a common Metafilter expression.

"... But to that second circle of sad hell,
Where ‘mid the gust, the whirlwind, and the flaw
Of rain and hail-stones, lovers need not tell
Their sorrows. Pale were the sweet lips I saw,
Pale were the lips I kiss’d, and fair the form
I floated with, about that melancholy storm."

The male actor looked unsettlingly identical to an old friend of mine, whom I've long since lost contact with.

I hope the rest of the videos are equally well done.

Who mentioned penise'? I merely remarked that Fassbender is a far better dancer (SFW). Anything else is your own lewd fixations.

Wow, that was pretty good - liked the cinematography. I am also thoroughly impressed with Shia's performance. And I never thought I'd be saying this, but I thought he was pretty attractive in the video (I still think of him as a quirky kid in Even Stevens so I still feel weird saying that).

Gah! That made my brain do so many painful somersaults!
"Is that who I think it is? No way. He's way more expressive. That's totally his goddamn tattoo. No way!"

Beautifully done, Mr/Mrs. Ros.

You're so right. And I heard they're talking to Chad Kroeger about replacing him which has got me all kinds of excited.

The video is as phony-artsy and insipid as the music (is that what we're supposed to do -- say if we like it or not?)

I liked her necklaces at the beginning, and of course they are both pretty and thin and young.

It's a band. :D

I love Sigur Ros. Love this song. I kind of think the video is one of the most laughably pretentious things I've ever seen, though.

Still looking forward to the rest, though.

The only Sigur Ros videos I've seen that have truly enhanced the music (ie: taken me to a more profound level of engagement) have been Glossoli and maybe this version of Hoppipolla from the movie Heima. Otherwise, I always feel like I'm getting less than I would if I just closed my eyes.

That said, I applaud the sentiment in this one. It all just takes too long, but close my eyes and time just sort of dissolves.

I was with it until the lollipops, and then I just got the impression that they were making a parody of what someone would think would be in a Sigur Ros video.

They chopped off Arvo Pärt's legs with sexy romantic fantasy video.

Needed more bodily fluids.

Seriously, this was a much better piece of art than the video that went with Erykah Badu's version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

I found the video like I find most of Sigur Ros' music - alot of it I don't get, it often dips into what seems like preciousness, but after it's over, parts of it stick in my brain and the impression is positive, and I look forward to experiencing it again.
