I love Dover. Where else can you get Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Anarchism, Insane Prophetic Poetry, and Physics Papers, all in one convenient place, and at reasonable prices too?

mmm, monkeyjuice, did you notice that dover is a =publisher=, not just a bookstore? Yeah, they rip off amazon web design, but what they're =really= about is cheap paperback versions of classic literature and useful nonfiction books.

Dover is especially well-known to grad students who find their math texts, at about $10/book, beat any of the yellow books (Springer-Verlag) $40-$80/book. I must own at least 10 Dover math books.

actually, if you try to buy something from doverpublications.com, notice where you end up: Yahoo's store. my guess is that Dover made the wise choice of letting someone else deal with the e-commerce side of things.

Dover is scrumptious. They have two (physical) bookstores, one just north of Canal Street on Varick, and another in Long Island where their warehouse is. They're both very basic (like their books, although the paper and bindings are very good, guess they can do that if they're not paying royalties to authors!). The one on Varick has way basic steel shelves and is stuck in an office building, definitely not something you would discover unless you were looking for it or out of sheer luck. The LI one is cool since they have the warehouse right there: they can pull out any book from their catalog. The catalog, man, that's a great browse because they have books on so many different topics and some plain wacky ones too. I wish them a long and healthy commercial life.

I have Heart of Darkness, Self-Reliance and Other Essays (Emerson) (a buck each!) and The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce. All timeless and cheap. Also Winsor McKay. Dover rocks.
