Literally giggled in delight. I don't care if it's chopped and looped, it's still a thing of beauty. Reminds me of the Oops I Did It Again / Will The Real Slim Shady Please Stand Up mashup, in which yes, the backing track was slowed, cut and looped, but it's still wonderful.

It never ceases to amaze me that one of the LMFAO guys used to be a day trader. Also, I keep hearing some variation of "people don't realize that LMFAO is just a big joke." I wish someone would explain that. I mean, they look goofy, but the music and lyrics don't seem to be going for laughs any more than the Black Eyed Peas do...

The Black Eyed Peas embraced a coordinated effort to become what they are now. Seriously, compare this very fun track from 2000 that actually features decent rapping and a talented guest vocalist to this mindless, even by dance-pop standards pap with a singer who actually can't sing very well at all. Every step they took from Elephunk (2003) on has been part of their be-as-dumb-as-possible strategy. So when a new act comes out of the gate doing exactly that thing while laughing and winking the entire time and they're directly related to Berry Gordy? Yeah, they know. They know. (And I think their lyrics are hilarious. Just because they're not making jokes doesn't mean they're not funny. See also: Sparks, Pet Shop Boys.)

There's a filking joke that goes,

Every song ever written can be categorized as either Greensleevable lyrically (which means that the lyrics of Greensleeves can be sung to its music) or musically (the lyrics of the song in question can be sung to the music of Greensleeves). If a song is both at once, it is called "perfectly Greensleevable."

Dance is not different. A well-known Scottish folk dance, typically danced to the song "Road to the Isles", can be easily adapted to many other songs, including the B-52s "Roam Around the World". Swing dance and the Hustle are the same dance, separated by 30 years, and both are danceable to another nearly endless list of songs. So, this mashup isn't surprising in the least. Fun, and funny, because both of them are so frivolous, yet the connection is a leap. Oh, I think I know how this goes. To put it in the words of a very distinguished Jazz trumpeter... "This is a concept which is well understood by everyone that keeps up with modern broadcasting techniques. So what happens teams is that we take a selection of songs and switch the words around between them. It might help to think of the songs as Grand Prix racing cars and their drivers. All the drivers could easily get out and swap cars in any combination, and it wouldn't matter which car with which driver - you'd still have the unrivalled spectacle of grown men dressed in romper suits driving mobile fag packets round in circles for two hours. "So, Tim, will you sing the words of Staying Alive by The Bee Gees, to the tune of The Toreadors Song from Carmen..." (and previously on the blue).

That's not really a criticism, though. posted by KathrynT at 1:09 AM on June 28 [1 favorite +] [!] I think these two comments triangulate on my own take on this: the don't-take-us-too-seriously name of the band and the ultra-generic song title are both examples of what I see all the time in the descriptions for YouTube videos ("this is just something I threw together in five minutes") and in ten thousand different Flickr/ Facebook photo collections online entitled "Random" -- it is a linear descendant of what Douglas Coupland termed Derision Preemption twenty years ago: "a life-style tactic; the refusal to go out on any sort of emotional limb so as to avoid mockery from one's peers." That is what Mr. Occam tells me fits best the situation of jokey-named band putting jokey-named title on undistinguished slice of dance music product. Don't like our music? Whatever.
