NBA players wear bowties now. Bowties are cool.

I'm surprised more draftees didn't follow LeBron and Dwyane's lead and wore think plastic glasses (with or without lenses).

The link is messed up. Maybe one of the mods can fix it?

Never again will I claim that only sysadmins have neckbeards.

The "Neckest Beard" award comes with a free copy of the GNU/Hurd distribution signed by RMS himself.

think plastic glasses

Batteries out of house paint and thinking plastic! Truly we live in an age of miracles.

I'm not convinced that beard exists on his neck. Unless of course he has no lower jaw, which is totally plausible.
posted by Brocktoon at 6:52 PM on June 29, 2012

Nope, not a neck beard.

Lillard had a swinging jacket, man.

It's impressive how put together these guys look. Most of them are 19, 20 years old, and they're not only wearing suits that fit (surely no easy task when you're six-foot-a-lot), but there's a surprising amount of style going on: pattern mis-matching, pocket squares, the hand-tied bowtie, the cutaway collar.

Stylish dressing has become a bit of a thing in the NBA. Nice to see these kids ready to carry on the tradition.

(For the thick plastic glasses reference, check out NBA Hipsters.)

"It's impressive how put together these guys look. Most of them are 19, 20 years old, . . ."

Dressing well is currently the in thing in NBA circles (helped, no doubt, by the league's dress code). So, these young men are motivated by the social expectations of their soon to be peers.

Nevertheless, I'm sure their agents have several excellent tailors and stylists on speed-dial.

"Former New York Knick All Star and fashion enthusiast Walt 'Clyde' Frazier" offers a critique of the best-dressed 2012 NBA draftees (YouTube).

Well, Clyde was right about the too-skinny Windsor and the buttons on the shirt collar. Good observations all around. Nifty video. (Also, I'm loving what Clyde was wearing. Well done, that.)

And, to be fair, Lamb's pink pocket square was a good idea that almost offsets the buttoned shirt collar.

After reading that, I must ask: when the hell did pro athletes get so young?

They mostly looked super sharp, except for, and I could not have predicted this was a sentence I would ever say, OH MY GOD, KIDS, ROLL THE BILLS ON YOUR SNAPBACKS. At least a little bit, give it some shape.
posted by Eyebrows McGee at 7:16 PM on June 30, 2012

Eyebrows McGee, I agree! But the draftees only receive the snapbacks shortly before they're photographed.

This article at Grandland is an enjoyable read about how Draft Night goes.

It wouldn't surprise me if the NBA had rules against the draftees playing with their bills. They have rules to cover just about every other fashion situation, including only wearing your headband with the logo facing up, because otherwise the sun explodes or the oceans boil over or something.
