"I feel like a free man."

"By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life. Back then, my mind would wander to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with. I reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager.. the ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend for the first time. I realized they were written in a language I did not yet speak." --Frank Ocean comes out.

Feeling like Adam when he first found out this existed, imma try to swim from something bigger than me. Now every time somebody asks me if I sing songs to get my women I say no, they say okay I don't believe it. I believe that marriage isn't between a man and woman but between love and love, but I can dream.

"One journalist... believes that on Channel Orange, Frank Ocean comes out as bisexual. The argument has people talking, but it all rests upon Ocean's use of a few key pronouns...you can hear him sing about being in love and there are quite obvious words used like ‘him’ and not ‘her'."

I think i started something. Or do you not think so far ahead? 'Cause I been thinkin bout forever.

bardic, from his tumblr, right before he posted the image with the story,

we’re all a bunch of golden million dollar babies. my hope is that the babies born these days will inherit less of the bullshit than we did. anyhow, what i’m about to post is for anyone who cares to read. it was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round.. i figured it’d be good to clarify..

also, tyler, the creator is congratulating him on twitter (and, admittedly, still clowning around)

That Complex article puts words in Max's mouth. In her article, she never says "bisexual".

Congratulations to Frank. I'm taking it as a genuine move, and I think Odd Future's growing up a bit.

No.

One day in the future, people will find people they share love with and nobody will bat an eye about the gender of that other person.

It's pretty interesting that he wrote it 7 months ago. It's also interesting that a few folks are waiting to see if it's real or a publicity stunt. I mean, sure it's Odd Future, but the same shit would be Not Okay aimed at, say, Anderson Cooper, right?

Semi-related, I'm pretty certain that Channel Orange will be the best pop R&B album in a long time.

Well, yeah. It's kind of misogynistic, and he says the "n word". Though, I might be reading too much into this, I'm going to give it my run down. Maybe you'll be less.. annoyed?

He's basically saying "Finally, I've kind of known all along. No wonder you never got laid. Hahhaha."

And the last part, "My nigga dawg" shows the most support. He's not really calling him a "nigga", that's not the point of this sentence. When you say "my nigga", it really means they've done something you approve of, or agree with. Like saying "Thats my boy!" You're not pointing out gender, you're calling out praise.

But, yeah, he probably could have done without "ain't got no bitches" part. I still think this is a really big deal, for the RnB and Hip Hop industry. Odd Future is really big right now, and this might change a lot of people's minds.

Some people seem to have this personal rule of thumb that goes like "Every time a gay man comes out, assume he's just doing it for the attention." And that's a seriously shitty way to look at the world. I mean, first off, it's obviously not true — and anyone with the least bit of empathy for gay people would know it wasn't true. So you'd really have to be a bit of a homophobe just to adopt that rule of thumb in the first place.

On the other hand, I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a personal rule of thumb that goes like "Every time one of the Odd Future dudes opens his mouth, assume he's just doing it for the attention." Because honestly I think that's the most charitable assumption to make. Way kinder to think "Oh these are some clever kids who know how to generate media buzz" then "Oh wow these are some seriously dangerous and unhinged assholes," right?

So if someone says this is just a publicity stunt then my reaction depends on which rule of thumb is generating the idea. If it's the "gay men are a bunch of drama queens" thing then fuck that, the general principle you're reasoning from is flawed and homophobic. If it's the "Odd Future will say anything to stir shit up" thing then, yeah, okay, the general principle you're reasoning from is pretty sound, even if I suspect you're gonna turn out to be wrong in this particular instance.

Tl;dr: Me personally, I'm assuming this isn't a publicity stunt. But I don't think it's necessarily homophobic to entertain the possibility that it is.

One of the things that is really impt is that mainstream outing, constructed via PR agent becomes a way of narrowing focus and often ending discourse--it becomes a way where we no longer talk about the subject's homosexuality, and that homosexuality is never allowed to become queer.

This text, in it's glorious, self directed beauty--and that this text is intended to be an introduction to other texts, sometimes about how he loves a man, and sometimes about other things, consturcted by himself, as an introduction to his own narratives and ideas, not through a second or third party, widens focus and begins new discourse. it becomes a way where we are given permission to talk about the subject's queerness, even the line the cleverness of the love being maligant works as a deconstruction of heteronormative tropes about falling in love, or as a fellow theologian noted, he writes: "For the rest of my life, I will use "It wasn't a plane though. It was a Nissan Maxima." as a general-purpose description for the banalization of dreams and ideals."--that it gives us more vocabulary, more ways to tell stories that are so often not talked about.

His work is sad, beautiful, epic, and ambitous as fuck--adding queerness on top of that, sigh amazeballs.

Thought the FPP should've linked to Pyramids, Ocean's latest ten minute epic, which is just unbelievably good, even as it appears to be about a woman.

Really surprised and proud of Frank. Anyone who knows anything about the man should see that this isn't a "publicity stunt." He has never come across as anything other than a great, totally genuine guy, and he's always been one step removed from the antics of OFWGKTA.

This makes two gay Odd Future members. Really can't wait for people to stop pretending they're homophobic, especially as all their work evolves and mature.

The best commentary I've read about Odd Future and misogyny/homophobia/anti-oppression discourses: (the links kind of need to be read in order to fully make sense because of the way conversations on tumblr/lj flow)

- Odd Future and music as commodity
- online anti-oppression discourses part i, part ii
- Odd Future as sum of all white fears or black fears?

Um, I was 15 when I first drew that donut
5 years later, for our label yea we own it
I started an empire, I ain't even old enough
To drink a fucking beer, I'm tipsy off this soda pop
This is for the niggas in the suburbs
And the white kids with nigga friends who say the n-word
And the ones that got called weird, fag, bitch, nerd
Cause you was into jazz, kitty cats, and Steven Spielberg
They say we ain't actin' right
Always try to turn our fuckin' color into black and white
But they'll never change 'em, never understand 'em
Radical's my anthem, turn my fucking amps up
So instead of critiquing and bitchin', bein' mad as fuck
Just admit, not only are we talented, we're rad as fuck, bitches

-- Tyler the Creator "Oldie"

I love the end of that video because it shows Odd Future as a bunch of dorky high-school / college-age kids just having fun.

Which is what they are. I get that they have lyrics that are objectionable. They aren't saying anything appreciably worse or different than a lot of kids I went to, at an almost completely white school, on an island near seattle, in the early 90s.

There is a lot more to these kids than just using some bad words.

bardic: Great story if it's true but this is OFWGKTA we're talking about.

If you haven't already, read about the return of Earl Sweatshirt. OFWGKTA is growing up. See also PinkMoose's link to an opinion article on Ebony, which notes that Ocean, 24 years old, "quickly went from ghostwriting for acts like Justin Bieber and John Legend to very publicly working with Beyonce and being featured on Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne." He's still relatively young, but I'd like to think he's mature enough (and serious enough about his career) to not use this as a chance to elaborately troll for publicity ahead of his forthcoming album.
