Gee thanks, now I got that stuck in my head the rest of the dayweek.

The worst part is that the song was already in my head so I already read the post like the song before I realized it was what it was.

But now that I've seen the video, this version of the song will be the one that always gets stuck in my head. Which is a win.

(Also a win turning "Your stare was holding/ Ripped jeans, skin was showing/ Hot night, wind was blowing" into "You, cookie showing // And me, hunger growing // Let's get skim milk flowing"... because, well, just awesome.)

That was pretty good. Not what one would expect from 'cookie monster' vocals on a Call Me Maybe cover.

Another Call Me Maybe thing that I liked but doesn't necessarily deserve an FPP.

I'm, uh, kind of depressed by the Sesame Street offices. I was expecting a bit more colour, a bit more spark, a bit more... well, ... Sesame Street.

What was the joke?

I don't get what the big deal is about this song other than the incorrect punctuation in the title.

I'm Elmo and I know it is not quite as good as this, but would make a good B side.

No to all things Elmo.

Based on what Elmo has been up to recently my first thought when I saw the "Cookie monster goes crazy" link was "Oh, no, not another person costumed as a beloved children's character spouting hate screeds!"

What was the joke?

From what I can gather from one of their earlier tumblr posts, they made a reference to Call Me Maybe on Twitter, and then someone posted a screenshot of the tweet on tumblr and got a bunch of reblogs.

The "Call Me Maybe" phenomenon has reached its highest point. Everyone can pack up and go home now. Thank you, Cookie Monster.

Ah, that's it. I didn't realize Call Me Maybe was an actual song.

I am rolling on the floor laughing after that.

I'd love to see a study on why the original song went viral and what in it inspires people to parody it.

Ah, that's it. I didn't realize Call Me Maybe was an actual song.

Since I haven't listened to the radio for music since I figured out how to hook a portable CD player up to a car, I know the feeling quite well. There's tons of supposedly "popular" songs that I literally won't get to hear until six months after they've made their splash. A couple of years ago, I spent an entire summer under the delusion that Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" was a cover of the Jill Sobule until I actually looked up the video one day.

I am now inspired to come up with a fake song title to name-drop in conversation and make copious references to on Facebook as though it's a well-known current hit, just to see who notices.

I'm so clued out on popular culture that it takes a sesame street parody to lead me to the original!

My favorite is still Cookie Monster singing Tom Waits.

Which poses* the question: is Cookie Monster doing a Tom Waits impression, or is Tom Waits doing a Cookie Monster impression?

And then you realize omg: YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THEM IN A ROOM TOGETHER.

* not "begs"
And this is my second Tom Waits joke in as many days.

Via...How the Internet is Going to Kill "Call Me Maybe".

Well if that happens, it'd be filicide, since, apologies to Carly Rae Jensen and her production crew, the Internet is what produced "Call Me Maybe" in any way that matters.

(for all values of "any way that matters" that corresponds to the same way that it could be "killed")

Would Top 40 radio have been any different? I don't like the song, but I get it. Songs like this have a shelf-life of 1 month, tops. Whether is scads of covers or once-an-hour rotation on KHTS, every pop song will get played out eventually.

I'm pretty disappointed in Sesame Street too. I got to the point where they showed the humans with toy xylophones ... but ... those aren't even in the backing track!

You are instrument syncing to an instrument that's not in the song!

They basically tried to do a cover of the Jimmy Fallon/Roots/Jepsen version with the toys ... but without the toys.

This video just fails on so many levels. I'm weeping inside a bit, cuz Cookie was always my favorite.

Catchy pop tune? I think that's about it.

Numerous parodies are not unique to Call Me Maybe.
posted by mrgrimm at 2:20 PM on July 10, 2012

Oh, "Call Me Maybe" is getting plenty of play on Top 40 radio as well. It's just the parodies are more restricted to online.

BTW, my co-worker insists that the song originally went viral because Justin Bieber tweeted about it, but I fear what parts of the internet I'd have to wander into to verify that.

I heard "Call Me Maybe" for the first time in a 7-11 after seeing the documentary about Mark Sandman and Morphine. If anything could make Mark Sandman's death that much crueler and more painful, listening to Carly Rae Jespen would be it.

I am so glad Cookie Monster is eating cookies again!

I understand the thinking involved in why they had him eating vegetables instead of cookies a while back, but to me that was such a violation of the humor of Jim Henson, who knew that kids liked cookies and would therefore get a big kick out (and not be afraid of) a monster that goes crazy for cookies.

That well thinking people without a sense of humor could have gotten access to the Cookie Monster character really upset me.

Tney should make this a Muppet Theater interview question:
"We all know how cookies can be bad for you and that there is a national obesity problem and that kids have a terrible diet and don't eat enough vegetables. What would you propose we do with the Cookie Monster character going forward?"
"I would have him stop eating cookies. Maybe he could be a brussle sprouts monster! Kids would think that is hilarious!"

"Thank you for that input. That's it for the interview. Can I show you the way to the door?"

There's a rather defensive (albeit well documented) page on the Muppet Wiki about that.

In fact, Cookie Monster has long eaten all kinds of things, many of them not even food items. Cookies are his preference, but the numbers and letters he's put away over the years....

Yes, of course, he once ate a full sized Ford truck, but that was only when he couldn't get a million cookies. They would never let the Cookie Monster ask for a million cookies during his 'vegetable' period.

Look, Cookie Monster knows that cookies are a sometimes food. Rationally, he knows this. He admits himself that "this is crazy". And he only wants to share the cookie. He's trying to restrict his calorie intake, he's trying to be polite, but we all need a treat sometimes. Maybe you shouldn't be taunting him, snacking right in front of him like that.

grumble grumble just a salad is not a big enough lunch grumble grumble grumble.

Would they? Wouldn't they? Who the hell can say. But they will do this when the Cookie Monster was on Martha Stewart, which I think demolishes your jumped-the-shark theory nicely. Yeah man, the Cookie Monster sold out man, he's been tamed man, used to be he'd demolished a pile of chocolate chips man but now he's all about asparagus, man!

I feel like this current incarnation is a violation of my innocence... I admit maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I don't want Cookie Monster calling me "baby."
