A seventeen year-old victim of sexual assault faces a potential jail sentence for tweeting the names of her attackers, in violation of a court order that the juvenile hearing remain confidential.

“I’m at the point, that if I have to go to jail for my rights, I will do it,” she said. “If they really feel it’s necessary to throw me in jail for talking about what happened to me ... as opposed to throwing these boys in jail for what they did to me, then I don’t understand justice.”

According to legal blogger Eugene Volokh, "an order barring a victim from revealing the names of her assailants is, I think, clearly unconstitutional."

Slate's XX Factor blog explores how social media is changing the dynamics between victims of sexual assaults and their attackers.

This post was deleted for the following reason: first link is paywalled, and as much as I enjoy Slate articles we're getting to the point where single link slate or Volkoh isn't enough to have a sexual assault post go okay on MetaFilter. Maybe rebuild and try again tomorrow keeping in mind the touchy topic? Thanks. -- jessamyn

We don't throw people in jail. They get trials no matter how horrendous the crime they are accused of.

You don't get a trial for contempt of court.
