i was at that game. it was the best and worst games i've still ever been to. billy hatcher is still one of my favorite 'stros because of that blast he hit in the 14th to tie the game. why jim deshaies didn't pitch in that series, i'll never know.

one of the great games ever, and I'm an Astros fan....

Many people forget Billy hit an upper decker ball that was foul by 5 feet or so a couple pitches before the homer. I remember tell the guys I was watching it with we were sunk; because he could never hit a ball that far again in his life. Then, he, ummm, corked one out.

I grew up in Houston, and I have to say that the Astros' uniforms from the 80s are one of the worst offences to fashion in all written history.

I live in Boston. I don't want to hear about any Game 6 in 1986.

It would have been interesting if the Astros had beaten the Mets that year, and faced the Red Sox in the Series. The Astros are the second oldest team in the league that has never won the Series (the Angels beat them out by one year). I think the Red Sox have the longest winless streak in the World Series, having won it last in 1918. At least then one team would have broken a curse.

i don't know, i sort of liked the eighties uniforms. but then, i don't really have any taste.

I kinda liked the hats they wore back then, with the white H superimposed on an orange star.

Even worse than their uniforms though, is how they applied the same color scheme to the seats inside the Astrodome. Even up until 1999, (when the Astros left for Enron field) and after the team had changed to their present uniforms, those red, orange and yellow seats were still there.

As a Red Sox fan, I probably should revel in the fact that the Cubs haven't won a Series since 1906, but I don't. There were two terrific LCS that year (as long as your name wasn't Donnie Moore). I was glad the Sox didn't have to face Mike Scott: he looked unbeatable that year.

Except when he lost.

my god, those seats were tacky. perhaps it was a form of strategy, though; the visiting teams would look up into the stands, see the stripes of bright, mismatched colors on the seats and become dizzy and confused, missing many a fly ball.

There was actually a book written about the series: The Greatest Game Ever Played by Jerry Izenberg.

the 80s uniforms were by far the greater. now, with those bland confederate stars and the new enron field, the astros experience is no different than in any other city. gimme my turf back!
