The Entitled Generation: If you were born before 1946 or after 1964, you are free to go. Kindly close the door on your way out. I need a private moment with my fellow baby boomers.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Op-Eds are sort of classically tricky at best as post material. If this is really worth posting as something other than Starting Point From Which To Argue With Each Other (Or The Author In Proxy), maybe try again with some substantial context/analysis that makes it clear why? -- cortex

I may be wrong in this but I suspect the author blames the Dems and the left for the problems rather than facing the basic fact that (so far as I recall) the Dems were and remain willing to raise taxes (the Bush give away) and cut entitlements whereas the GOP wants ONLY entitlements cut.
Yes. We do need more money coming in. And yes. We do need cuts...but we do need both.

Crikey.

Don't get your hopes up. This isn't another serving of inter-generational resentment grarfeed.

It's just more gut federal entitlements grarfeed, slightly warmed over.

Which is a shame, 'cause I'm really resentful of having to change my aged grandmother's bedsheets every couple of weeks.

I absolutely *hate* generational politics. This is thin soup, a call to repent and dismantle social assistance programs - the term "entitlement" is a flat out weasel word.

Think of those things like old age pensions as "rights as a citizen" instead of "entitlements" and people will get as pissed off about cuts to social programs like they think about gun control when people start to mess with "rights".

I'm left, liberal or whatever but when people talk about making cuts to social security (even when I have a lot of years before I can collect it), I want to string up the bastards who keep moving the goalposts.

Yeah, Bill Keller acting the Logical Centrist Bill Keller role is pretty much non-news.

I'll wait for the thoughtful, detailed, savage takedowns to begin appearing. Should be a couple hours at most.

But the traditional liberal alternatives — raise taxes on the well-to-do, cut military spending — are not nearly enough by themselves [to fund entitlements like Social Security]. The arithmetic simply doesn’t work, unless we face the fact that entitlements are a bargain we can’t afford to keep, not in full.

I'd really like to see his arithmetic.

Disco is one thing for which boomers need never apologize.

...oh, you thought it was generational solidarity. No, no my friends. We have defunded the rest; now those of us who have got ours turn at last to steal the food you were promised and paid taxes for from the plates of our classmates.
