Tomorrow is MKUltra Appreciation Day. I support marriage equality. Everyone give me a buck.

Good! I was just saying to myself, "What kind of consumable item can I purchase and upload to Facebook in order to irritate all my friends and relatives from Mississippi because of their bigotry-themed purchases and uploads last week?"

I know, I'm bringing the snark, and I don't mean to dump on the thread by doing it. I'm conflicted. Just because I feel it's unserious and infra dig to have public debates this way isn't going to stop people from doing it, so I suppose there ought to be some kind of equivalent that, unlike the kiss-in, does not require a same-sex partner or a willingness to be punched.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for marriage equality, gay rights, etc, but why does this "appreciation day" stuff feel like some steep, slippery slope of social media fueled, politically driven consumerism that we will regret some day?

I can understand not supporting a company that is evil, but does that mean that I'm obligated, on some designated day, to follow the crowd through the doors of every company that is simply "not evil"? I think I'm going to take that $5 we would have spent on a couple of overpriced drinks at Starbucks and send it to my local HIV/AIDS resource center non-profit.

I hope Walmart decides to support marriage equality so we can see how "Walmart Appreciation Day" goes over.
