ASCII art storytelling about ASCII art. Very soothing in the middle of a hectic work day. Make sure to follow the calibration instructions. (Found it via the 5k ref logs; we should make those public.)

I have fond memories of downloading ASCII art (especially ASCII vt-100 animations) from Usenet or FTP sites and write'ing them to other people logged into the UNIX server at university.

Of course, if we were feeling cruel, we'd just grab a handy core dump (CS students always had plenty of those) and cat core > write victimname, thinking we were terribly clever.

Sigh... The halcyon days of youth.

One interesting thing not touched on in this ASCII art article is non fixed-width font ASCII art, which I beleive came from the 'AOL' world (rather than the fixed-width UNIX/Internet world of standard ASCII art). I've seen some very interesting pictures done woth non fixed-width fonts, some of them have a very differnet look to them. (well, can't find any quick examples, but I have seen some striking pictures).

Kaefer: I would kill for a copy of Bambi Meets Godzilla as animated ascii that someone made way back in the BBS age.

anybody see the ASCII version of Deep-Throat? I've never been able to find it.

As requested, ASCII Deep Throat. WARNING: We're not talkin' Watergate here. This is an ASCII-fied version of the (cue bow chicka bow bow music) porn flick. View at your own risk.

I've seen that ASCII Deep Throat, the problem is it's like the whole movie and I um... kinda boring. Also I don't really know the original movie very well and in the beginning there's like cars or something - It'd be interesting to see something that I'm a little more familiar with the original source material - such as 'Star Wars' or '2001' or 'Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo'... yknow.

I mean.. pr0n is kewl, don't get me wrong.

thanks MarkB.

besides the pr0n aspect, which is kind of lost, I like the way they mix such different mediums. there's some conceptual artist who projected ASCII renderings of buildings on the buildings on the buildings themselves, and I've played around a lot with those Gif2Ascii programs, way cool.

Thanks!

What a superb link. Here's the ASCII star wars animation, Qrys. It's still not finished, but it's further along than last time I looked.

I also found some instructions for how to make your own ASCII animations.
