70 South, a community weblog and news page for Antarctica. Strangely familiar in many respects.

!Re: Penguins for Sale?

I have done a reverse lookup search on thier phone# to no avail. I did a business search for Waukesha Wisconsin and found that it comes back to Penguin Spa and Sauna. I may attempt to call them and post the results tomorrow. Mort...

After a little research I have determined that this is a demo sight for journeymilwaukee.com. They are commercial web site developers. Found this out by calling the Waukesha and Milwaukee chamber of commerce to find out the phone number of journeymilwaukee and calling them. Mort....

Belay my last. I just received a reply from James Knickelbein who's phone number I have been given but asked not to release. He informs me that this is part of his web design portfolio for his resume. I have asked if he was on the Ice but have received no reply. Mort..."

Boy does this guy hog the limelight! Mort... I do like certain touches of his, like "Belay my last". Mort...But, most catchy of all, is his way of signing off. Mort... Mort...

My friend Sarah is there now and has posted a list of antarctica dispatches that are really interesting. My favorite one -- the furor over putting on The Vagina Monologues on the local base. Thanks mostly to Sarah, I have gotten a postcard from every continent this year!

"[WATCH OUT, POTENTIALLY OFFENSIVE WORD AHEAD] The Vagina Monologues...
(from jessamyn's second link)

Imagine if this were a rule here on MetaFilter!

Though I prefer a play to have at least four characters and so agree that it is quite offensive to mention monologues

In other antarctic news, an old friend of mine and her husband work for The Arctic Sun, the local paper. Here's this season's first issue (PDF), as well as their personal site. Kristin has many facinating stories from last year spent at McMurdo Station, including rehearsals for Ice Stock, antartica's music festival.

I spent 8 months in '97 and '98 at Palmer Station working for the NSF. I was a cook for 35 or so scientists and staff. I look at 70south often, because there is not much news elsewhere about what's happening on the ice. Antarctica is such a magnetic place. I saw the Shackleton IMAX recently and have been jonesing to go back ever since.
