Nope, Lil Bub was born that way. "Born as the runt of a feral litter outside Bridavsky's hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, Bub was obviously different from the get-go." Doesn't mean she doesn't somehow have Munchkin DNA, though.

I heard the original Maru died years ago.Ever since then it has bee a series of clones. They haven't perfected the cloning process yet but they can shoot a whole video if they go real quick. In to speed up the shooting they gave the Maru clones super-genius level intelligence. This Allows the clone to learn Japanese right before the shoot starts in order to take direction. By time the shoot is over the many of the clones will have mastered 7-8 different language, advanced mathematics, and since Maru had a bit of an ear for music, they have completed their second or third symphony. You haven't seen anything until you have seen a rather portly cat compose music or solve complex differential calculus problems while climbing in and out of boxes. Unfortunately most also figure out that they have only a short time to live, some try to develop advance gene therapy techniques, but most accept it philosophically, that a candle that burns twice as bright burns but half as long and that they have achieved more in their short 2-3 hour lifespan than many will in an entire lifetime.
