"I debated whether or not to share this story....but I decided it was important. Because in my own way, I can (unfortunately) point out exactly what is wrong with men when they don’t realize how hard it is to be a woman. How we do not have equal opportunities and freedoms in everyday life. How most men, even good caring men, have no clue what we go through on a daily basis just trying to live our lives."
This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a pretty horrible story, but the "whatchya reading?" phenomenon is pretty well trodden ground now here on Metafilter, and a single blog post about a terrible incident is more outragefilter at this point. Perhaps there's a way to work this into a more comprehensive post that might bring something new forward. -- taz
That was obviously not a pleasant day for her, but two things:
a) rude/crazy people on the train aren't exactly representative,
b) some nice people really want to know what you're readingw
c) and most people know a quick look up/down or a, "mmm," means no more talking. So, it's not exactly a 50/50 coinflip whether to respond.

Well, it was going to be two things until I split apart b and c.

How do you know they're not representative? She just said that they're representative. I'm not sure why you think that you are more aware of her daily life than she is.

Relevant. Please take a look at that thread first and think it through before jumping to a quick, dismissive remark.

Okay, when I was living in New York, I found that wearing sunglasses and listening to my iPod loudly kept most people at bay when I was riding on the subway.
The one time I was seriously harassed was when I was reading the latest Madame Xanadu trade paperback. Some crazy white bearded guy came up to me and started free-associating about this comic and why I was reading it. He was really intense and creepy... and it was seriously unnerving. I ended up jumping off the train a few stops early and hoofing it up Broadway to my sister's place.
But yeah-- I discovered that reading usually attracts creepers, rather than repels them.
