I feel kinda bad for this Psy guy. For as long as he lives, no matter what else he does, people are never going to stop asking him to do the horsie dance. He could invent a green energy supply that cured cancer, and people would still ask him to do the horsie dance.

I guess being fabulously wealthy and getting to have sex with whoever he wants probably offsets some of the emotional pain I'm sure he's in, but still. Horsie dance.

Better than the original, says I.

Note to self: spend more time in Little Tokyo.

The video has clocked up 186,614,028 YouTube views as of now ... but is anyone buying i.e. actually spending money, on the song? Yes, it appears they are.

Every time I have heard Gangam Style, in my head it has sounded like "Gundam Style." And what to my wondering eyes should appear...

PSY on SNL (wait for it... may not be available outside the US because NBC is, well, NBC)

I absolutely adore the original video. The world needs more fun things, and this is fab.

Best parody so far. Yes, better than Gundam Style. My con security hindbrain is doing the "oh SHIT, the little bastards are TOTALLY gonna be trying that on the escalators into perpetuity now..." but other than that, pure fun. I especially appreciated that during the "yoga" butt scene, it was Deadpool's own ass that was the focus, not some random woman's. He would totally have those screamy feelings about his butt.

I'm pretty sure this is a feature, not a bug.

I'd be interested to know some more specifics behind the very well-played Gangnam parody Hongdae Style.
It's on a par with an French TV show's remake of the infamous Justice Stress video. Is Trend Factory a TV show?

This is great. At least as good as the original.

The hug and freeze frame at the end lasted just long enough to notice that the guy hugging the Deadpool guy was wearing a pedobear hat. I knew of such things existing, I just dint know they were purchased, let alone worn.

> Is Trend Factory a TV show?

Kind of. They're a "broadcast jockey" team on AfreecaTV, a South Korean video streaming service. As AfreecaTV is Korea-only, here's their YouTube channel.

Their "Hongdae Style" parody was one of winners of a recent "Gangnam Style" video parody contest. Celebratory pictures with Psy.

I'll bet you at least 75% of the people appearing in this video thought that was Spider-man dancing around. So it's win-win, really.

I love Gangnam Style. This is weak though. Put a tiny bit of effort into the dancing, maybe?

All work and no play makes Psy a dull boy...
posted by Wordshore at 6:44 PM on September 16, 2012 [2 favorites]

What I loved about this one was that it totally understood the underlying social awkwardness that's the foundation of the original. Most of the parodies I've seen just make it an opportunity to dance in public. Which is, of course, awesome by itself, but not exactly a big challenge.

I have to say that Psy is getting some top-notch career advice and hitting the right promotional opportunities with gusto and just enough not to overplay his hand or overstay his welcome. VMAs, Ellen (with Britney and Simon, teaching them the dance*), SNL.... I suppose it helps that he went to school here and has excellent English, but even people who grow up here can blow a chance like this. So far he hasn't. Of course, he's also a superb performer who knows how to work a crowd.

* A lot of people, including Deadpool guy, don't seem to get the dance right. It's right-left-right-right, not just right-left-right-left with a roll.

They might ask him to dance like Lady Gaga or Beyoncé.

Thanks, needled. Is Hongdae also a neighborhood (with some specific reputation), or is something else being alluded to?
posted by progosk at 11:57 PM on September 16, 2012

Progosk, Hongdae is across town from Gangnam, home to a major fine arts college and club scene. Gangnam is about conspicuous consumption, but Hongdae is more about youth and creative expression.

I read this as "Deadwood vs. Gangnam Style" and now everything in this world is a flimsy shadow of a world that could be.
posted by Legomancer at 4:58 AM on September 17, 2012 [2 favorites]

"Hongdae" is short for Hongik University, which is known for its fine arts and design departments. The area around Hongdae long had a reputation for quirky bars and cafes, as well as the few live music venues in Seoul. The heart of the Korean indie music scene is the Hongdae area. So Hongdae has become a shorthand for quirky and offbeat, non-mainstream, especially in music. Also, Hongdae is north of the Han River.

The area does not have just Hongik University, but not far away are Yonsei University and Ewha Woman's University, as well as Sogang University (and they are on consecutive stops on Seoul Subway line 2). So there are a large number of college students in a relatively small area, as well as the young people drawn to the Hongdae area because of its reputation.

Of course, one has to consider many of these college students are the product of Gangnam School District 8, and live the Gangnam life when not in school.

Yeah, I don't know... it'd be great if somebody gave you a billion dollars in exchange for a promise to eat nothing but Cheerios for six days of the week. About a year in, you'd be living like a king. It'd be great. But you'd still be UNBELIEVABLY sick of Cheerios.
