First Amendment rights, applied in light of the special characteristics of the school environment, are available to teachers and students. It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.And easier to read than the actual opinion is this review of a book about the case.

I guess we could start legislating against stupidity, but our jails are full enough as it is....
And let's not forget: I may disagree with what she says, but I'll defend to the death her right to say it. Any subversion of freedom of speech, even in a good cause, does harm to the idea.
