My friends who work in retail, say that sales in general have slumped off. Are more people really buying angels? Is there going to be another cover story on angels in Time... If angels do exist, will buying a little metal pin of one help protect you? I think I'll sink my money into stuffed penguins.

After all those rumors of people letting rescuers know they were alive with cellphones, I was expecting sales to skyrocket... Or at least a distasteful ad.

I too am expecting a distasteful ad. One featuring a new SUV going over the rubble with a name like "Endurance" or something. Dust covered firefighters would be in the background holding their hands over their hearts. The sad thing is that you'll probably see this in 6 months, and it'll be a whole lot worse.

"I hear porn and beer sales have been through the roof." I dunno about that, but porn searches have gone up 50% higher on the internet, according to my stat-server. over 800 people have come across my weblog looking for porn alone. Thing is, I don't run a porn site. Sorry to disappoint them.

The whole religious renewal hadn't really bothered me, since I live in Tennessee, and Christianity is usually cranked up to 11 all the time around here anyway. What does scare me is the fact that programming on NPR is now being underwritten by Tyndale House, a conservative Christian publisher, as an opportunity to hawk the latest book in Tim LaHaye's "Left Behind" series of dispensational/apocalyptic Christian fiction. Don't forget that Tim LaHaye was both co-founder (together with Jerry Falwell) of the Moral Majority, and the founder of the extreme-right-wing Council for National Policy. He is also an alumnus of Bob Jones University. Forget unrest in the middle east. NPR programming sponsored by the radical religious right is a true sign of the End Times, my friends. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go make peace with my Goddess.

It's all about comfort food. I want to see some hard numbers on how much mashed potato consumption has gone up since Sept. 11. but, re: distasteful ads: I'd swear that I saw over some guy's shoulder on the subway yesterday a GM ad with a big headline "SACRIFICE IS FOR SUCKERS". Is there anyone who's seen this and can confirm? And maybe explain how it is *not* as utterly tasteless as it seemed from my trying-to-be-not-too-obvious glance?
