Long-held ethnic grudges have begun to erupt and many non-Alawite Syrians want payback. My advice to any Alawite with sufficient means is to GTFO.

Interesting article. I don't understand why there are Sunni Syrian's fighting on the side of the regime. "many opposition intellectuals have admitted that if the government's base was confined to Alawites, it would have fallen long ago." Is it a sectarian conflict? It doesn't appear so. What is it? To me it looks like the haves vs have-nots, country vs city, enfranchised vs disenfranchised. The people with connections in the government vs those on the out. There are many reasons for the conflict, but one is the recent Syrian drought which displaced over 1.5 million people who moved from the countryside into the suburbs of the cities to find work and food. This drought is thought to be caused by global warming. Global warming has been predicted to cause increased migrations and human conflict. [1]
