<em>What was wrong with the ice cream sandwich?
</em>
interesting shibboleth, to me it seemed very wrong not to start with a small bite out of each of two adjacent corners, then lick the ice cream out of the area between, &amp; so on. just taking a chomp out of it shows an astounding insensitivity to method and proportion.

I love this so much.

Whenever I see a floor or a wall with those little tiles in some seemingly intricate pattern it always amazes me when I can't find any flaws. A lack of imperfection is always surprising to me for some reason.

When I was a kid we had a set of Funk and Wagnalls encyclopedias. They also sent us a yearbook every year, listing the significant events of that year. We had about ten yearbooks, all nice and even in our shelf, along with 26 or so perfectly sized encyclopedias.

Then one year they sent us the new yearbook and it was... bigger. Like, an inch and a half taller and it stuck out a half inch or so. I think we got three years of those before we stopped getting them altogether.

Those books are still there in my mom's shelf, sticking out like a sore thumb. One of these days I think I'll just go set her house on fire to rid the world of this wrongness.

Is that one with all the icons a stereogram?
Is there a name for, not actual OCD, but for enjoying putting things in order?

When I was very young I'd rearrange boxes on shelves so they all faced the right way, put all the different funny-shaped soaps in the right containers, things like that. I stopped doing this when I grew a massive and painful sense of self-awareness, but it was peaceful while it lasted.

<em> just taking a chomp out of it shows an astounding insensitivity to method and proportion.</em>

I can understand that, but I can't get behind them on the Kit Kat. Have you tried attacking a whole Kit Kat from the short end like that? So crunchy! So textural! So much more satisfying to sink your teeth into a whole plank of Kit Kat than to break it into frail insubstantial fingers and nibble-nibble-nibble into them.

I'm not saying it's the only way to eat a Kit Kat, just that it's the only way <em>I</em> eat a Kit Kit anymore.

When I was younger and far less sensitive to others, I would go to the Howard Johnson's after midnight to order a large plate of something fried and Mountain Dew with unlimited refills. I was accompanied by other BBS nerds, this being the days before the internet, when we all carried clubs to defend ourselves from dinosaurs and roving boy-bands.

One of my favorite people in this menagerie of misfits was a man we shall call J__, as that was not his true name nor his chosen name, which was lifted from a Douglas Adams novel. He was a cheerful and easygoing guy, with a really sly and surreal sense of humor. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have done this to him, but...

As we'd chat, I'd flip over one of the jelly packets in the little jelly-bin. While he fixed that, I'd I'd turn the butter knife on my place setting so the edge faced outward. While he fixed that, I'd tear off only the very tip of my straw wrapper. While he peeled the rest of the paper from the straw, I'd swap the salt and pepper shaker screw-tops. While he fixed that, I flipped over one of the jelly packets in the little jelly-bin.

He did all this without breaking the flow of conversation, and seemed not to even know he was doing it.

My babysitter, an ancient woman named Mrs. Brown, had her own peculiar OCD which triggered mine. She loathed the sight of a half-empty cereal box, and fixed it <em>by combining the boxes into one regardless of type</em>. Thus you might unsuspectingly go to pour Cheerios and get a cornflake-rice crispy-Cheerio mix.

One of the early artificial intelligence experiments involved a computer program that simulated a Tetris-like stack of square blocks and a robotic arm. The arm was given the goal of stacking the blocks in a particular pattern, at which point it would stop moving --- that is, until the user came along and capriciously smashed the pattern of blocks, at which point the arm would dutifully spring back into action until the pattern was restored. Rinse and repeat.

<em>"When I was very young I'd rearrange boxes on shelves so they all faced the right way, put all the different funny-shaped soaps in the right containers, things like that."</em>

I got a box of 64 Crayolas for a project I did with a group of adults not long ago, and seriously everyone who came to sit at my table and do their coloring page for the project would, upon finishing, start automatically reorganizing the crayons in the box into their own idiosyncratic crayon organizing system.

<em>More than one person</em> said to me, upon finishing rearranging the crayons, "Wow, that was really fun, I haven't gotten to play with a box of crayons since I was a kid!" It wasn't the coloring that was fun -- it was sorting the box. Several offered explanations while working on the fiddly bits of their system, about why they preferred the oranges over HERE or how they had never satisfactorily settled the green-yellow and yellow-green positioning. Most, when faced with the NEW Crayola colors, had to hold the new colors next to a couple of old colors in succession and study where "canary" fits with respect to "lemon yellow."

Of course when I went home that night and was putting away my supplies, I dumped out the whole box on the dining room table so I could sort it properly. It was existentially soothing.

Last box left unchecked makes me squirm.

The righteous way to deal with that is to add another box underneath it that says "Make second to last item a lie" and then check 'em both.

The only person I have known intimately who obsessed over making everything perfectly organized did this (and they admitted this) because it was a lot easier than working.

See also: an organized desk is a sign of no creativity &amp; if it weren't for deadlines I would never get anything done.

I have never known a single person who owned one of those closet organizing systems. I have known three people whose job was to sell them.

What percentage of computer users know how to find everything on their disk with a couple clicks and typed keystrokes? Those are the ones I have always wanted to emulate but it seems beyond my power.

Oye. Ouch. My OCD hurts. At a job where I was in an office with 7 other teachers, they knew better than to borrow a book and put it back in the wrong place. It only took one or two times of them putting it back while I was at my desk and me putting it in the right place to get them all to stop. Seriously, who would put the grammar books with the math books? And why mix up the levels?

At my last job I always felt a need to pull out the paper collector tray thing on the printer. It always seemed to to be pushed all the way in when I would walk by (why?? So your documents can fly out and fall on the floor when you print?). I never did find out who was pushing in the tray. I like to think we had duelling obsessions.

I had a similar problem: the author of the gallery seems to think that a brilliant, mind-destroying variation on the Epimenides paradox can be lumped together with the violation of some obscure norm about chocolate consumption, displaying a lack of discernment showing that this person should not be trusted with such dangerous information as the hitherto-secret knowledge that Capri Sun isn't some kind of fluorescent orange.

It might be. I tried staring at it, and it slowly began to resolve, but just before I could make out what it was my brain refused to accept it and it snapped out of focus again. I honestly tried, several times, my main impression is that it resembled two Atari logos joined end-to-end... but then it goes blank again just before I can really see it.

If it's a stereogram, it wasn't meant to be seen by human eyes I guess. It's either the face of Cthulhu or a visual fnord. I can't decide which would be worse.

I once had a memory test where they laid out ten cards with random images on them, e. g. an apple, a car , a monkey, a gas station, &amp;c. Then I was blindered and they pulled one from the collection and shuffled them around and I was supposed to tell them which one was missing. Repeat 12 or 14 times. That test was exhausting. I wonder if people with strong preference for place for everything and everything in place might almost enjoy taking a test like that.

Does anybody know what the name for that test is?

<i>Whenever I see a floor or a wall with those little tiles in some seemingly intricate pattern it always amazes me when I can't find any flaws. A lack of imperfection is always surprising to me for some reason</i>

Those little tiles are usually made up of 12X12 or 18x18 (sometimes smaller for accent and narrow patterns) sheets of the small tiles. The factory would need to screw up for a single small tile to be off and then the installer not notice.

I've got one of these aggravating once you see it tile disconutities in the walk in shower I tiled. Because the floor slopes unevenly to a drain and because a cheap 12X12 tile is $0.79 and a cheap 3x3 tile is $1 I bought 12x12 tiles and cut them down to 3x3s thereby reducing my costs by 90+%. However my 3x3 tiles come in different styles because of the original 12x12 tile finished edges. IE: there are tiles with 2 finished edges, 1 finished edge, and 0 finished edges. This was a problem I identified before I started cutting the tiles so I was very careful to store the cut tiles so they conformed to their original tile so I could lay each 16 tile group as a single mega-tile group.

Except for along one wall where I needed to slide the tiles under the overhanging wall tiles and my remaining space was only 9" wide. I accidently stuck the finished edge tiles under the wall instead of using the tiles from one space in (discarding the set of tiles from the orignial finished edge) and I didn't notice till it came to lay the tiles three rows from the wall. What should have been a finished edge was tiles from the center of the 12x12. All the under wall tiles were all ready set up so I just left them but it makes me twitchy everytime I'm in that room.

I used to have a Capri-Sun almost daily during elementary school. and easily half the time I'd try to jab that straw into the package, it wouldn't go in. or the little sharp tip of the straw would bend. so the scissors are entirely justified.

that desktop is just an evil prank. deliciously evil.

<i>I like to think we had duelling obsessions.</i>

After a solid 2 weeks of reorganizing our kitchen utensil drawer on a daily basis, such that the <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=pastry%20cutter">pastry cutter</a> was in the drawer UNDER the pizza wheel (so the tines wouldn't get jammed and bent while the drawer was being pulled out), I started to wonder if I was going crazy. I was fixing it <i>all the time</i> and we weren't making biscuits or pie or even pizza for that matter, but every time I opened the drawer, the damn pastry cutter was back on top again. Finally, suspecting really specific gaslighting, I asked my husband about it. It turns out he had been pulling the pastry cutter out and putting it on top every time he opened the drawer, because he knew I was sensitive about it getting bent and he thought it would get crushed if left under the pizza wheel.

I suppose I'm not the only one who has sat in a stall and found strange faces in the patterns in the vinyl sheet flooring in front of me.

Sometimes, they whisper things to me. Oh, the secrets they tell!

My Best Friend and Best Man still laughs at the memory of my wife sorting out my bookshelf by color shortly after we got married. By <i>color</i>, I said. I was kind of short of breath for a while after that. Last month she reorganized my basement workbench, and this weekend she got to my dresser top again.

I do love her all the same.

You'd be surprised how many times I wanted to flag that comment. But I feel better now.

Uh oh... I was just tempted to break something else in the alphabet above, so people who thought it was all fine, would go "Naaarrrgggh." You are a bad influence, Purposeful Grimace. Bad.

There's a 5 minute edit window I'm going to have to restrain myself for.
