Jill Harness from Neatorama curates a collection of photos of Over 40 Fantastic Animal Halloween Costumes.

I was prepared to be meh about this, but the ferret dressed as Freddie Kruger warmed me to it, and by the time I saw the chihuahua dressed as the Pope, I figured I needed to share.

The cat in the clown costume is the same costume we dressed our youngest cat in last year.

She wasn't having it.

The chihuahua was pretty great, but I have to say:

1. Dachshund dressed as a french maid -- dude, you need professional help

2. Pug dressed as a pug -- excellent, but it really needed one more iteration

3. Ferret dressed as the Devil -- this is not a costume

4. Shih Tzu dressed as a Cowboy -- I have seen several guys who look exactly like this; it's uncanny!

5. Pugs dressed as royalty -- this is not really a costume. Pugs pretty much are royalty wherever they go. They have all the gravitas in the dog world. Well, until they roll out those unearthly tongues.

A Pit Bull as Queen Elizabeth

Day has been made. We can close up shop, folks.

(We're still trying to decide a costume for Apple. I'm thinking dinosaur.)

Ok, that's great and all but this special snowflake needs an idea for 2 black pitbulls. For that I rate this post a C+. *grumps away*

And no, skunk is not a functional idea because their tails aren't bushy enough.

Two black dinosaurs.

This is why they created "Lee Press-On Tails!"

At last I've found something truly scary to be afraid of for Halloween.

Something about that face is making me think Winston Churchill.

This is the best dog costume ever, so you can all go home now.

That chihuahua is clearly ignorant of what actual Papal regalia looks like. What is that? A red mitre? Sorry dog, you're doing it wrong, mitres are white.

This is the first list of this type I have seen that lacks the word "slutty" anywhere.

And I love A Bearded Dragon as The Mad Hatter!

This is appropriate, because many dogs do tricks for treats.

This looks like abuse to me. These animals don't need clothes.

Oh, my friend, I will see you and raise you Bones Mello.

Bones Mello, the AT-AT Dog, is admittedly pretty impressive, but the first link is conceptually above and beyond. Dressing a dog as an Imperial Walker or as a llama or as, well, a dog is disguising a quadruped as another quadruped. To invert the traditional pantomime horse approach (where two bipeds become a quadruped) and to disguise a four-legged creature as two bipeds is fucking fantastic.

Oooh, ooh! Black widow spider! You'd need some red colored hairspray (or whatever they used on skunk-dog) and just make the shape on their backs! Plus, there are 8 legs (between the two of them).

Those are, admittedly, a lot of fun. The low-effort iguana-as-bunny made me snort.

I haven't decided yet if this is the best thing ever, or the worst.

As I see it, the next hurdle is to dress up two cats as an octopus.

Or one octopus as two cats.

I don't know about you but the idea of tying, duct taping, or otherwise creating a conjoined twin with my two pits is enough to make me want to curl up in the corner in the fetal position. That's not to say they wouldn't submit and patiently allow me to try some ridiculousness with them but my costume judo simply isn't up to that sort of level.

Now adding legs to each pup.... hrm.... that's a worthy venture. This idea has legs...

Oh man. Two eight-legged black widow spiderdogs, bounding up the sidewalk, all happy to see you, not understanding why you're creeped out and backing away and then it becomes a game of chase.

Aaaaaughh all the nightmares, is what I'm saying.
