I needed that today. Thanks, aqsakal. (Baby elephants! Better than kittens!) posted by catlet at 7:03 AM on October 20, 2012 [1 favorite]
Love it. At the end, when the momma and baby are running toward each other, and then the mom just stops once she gets over her initial excitement, it's so human. The typical, "OMG THANK GOODNESS MY BABY IS OK" giving way to, "but now that you're safe, don't ever do that again or I'll kill you myself." posted by phunniemee at 7:04 AM on October 20, 2012 [5 favorites]
This baby elephant clearly watched some Maru videos and hoped to become an internet sensation by jumping in and out of boxes. Boxes being in short supply, she chose a well. She may need to refine her technique some, since it's not as easy as Maru makes it look.

That little, wet elephant running full speed towards it's mother was one of the greatest things I've ever seen. posted by Eekacat at 8:01 AM on October 20, 2012 [7 favorites]

I know, it just seemed like she got out of the well and started running flat out, and the only thing in her head is "mom mom mom mom mom mom." posted by sweetkid at 8:24 AM on October 20, 2012 [9 favorites]

Thanks for sharing this. Sometimes I quite enjoy and admire my fellow human beings. posted by pdxpogo at 11:20 AM on October 20, 2012
Just wondering if it might have been less of a risk to the baby if they had broken out some shovels and dug a ramp the baby could have used to just walk up and out. Whatever. She seemed unhurt by the ropes. posted by notreally at 3:11 PM on October 20, 2012

For reals. Dude tried to pull the baby's trunk. That's a no-no, I'm sure. Shovels! posted by DU at 6:14 PM on October 20, 2012
Maybe they didn't have shovels with them and had to act fast? Also, I'm not sure about well construction but maybe it wasn't just a hole in the ground. There could have been some structural thing that made digging impractical. posted by sweetkid at 6:33 PM on October 20, 2012
If I were a baby elephant and they called me "Mr. Shuffles," I'd be angry too. posted by Max Udargo at 8:59 PM on October 20, 2012 [1 favorite]
The horrible thing is that it won't be too long before someone shoots that baby (and its mother) with an AK and saws off its tusks (when they've grown) with a chain saw, leaving the carcasses to rot in the sun and accumulate vulture poop on them.
Man. And I was afraid I was going to be the downer in this thread.
Well played.
I can't take *any* joy from cute baby elephant videos now.
I'm going to watch some adult elephants get fall down drunk instead. posted by Mezentian at 4:05 AM on October 21, 2012
